Reminds me of Scrubs last week (or relatively recently). Kids were playing and one had arrange building blocks by color and a definate pattern. Turns out he was autistic.

I remember doing this myself actually. The teacher did not help me at all. That's why they took the picture, they were surprised
While he has never actually done that specific task, I am confident my 3 and a half year old son is capable of doing that. I would not call him a genius, since its impossible to tell at such a young age, but he is very smart for his age.
I don't think that the boy is all that unusual. My son could read books at 2, started understanding math at 3 and can also read music. He's almost 5 and can read really long childrens books by himself. The amazing thing is, we never taught him how to read. He learned it all on his own from remembering what we read.
I would walk by his room at 6AM and I could hear him reading books to himself. It is very cute. He also has taken a liking to my wife's organic chemistry book.
The thing is, we don't force him to do anything. We don't want to be one of those pushy parents that want their kids to graduate college at 12. We just want him to enjoy himself and have a normal life. It just happened that he has an affinity towards learning. His younger sister on the other hand, doesn't care at all for books. She just wants to play.

My wife teaches a 2-year-old classroom. One kid is the son of two actuaries, so obviously math is probably in his genes.
Nonetheless, she has cards around the room with numbers and the corresponding amount of dots laid out like dice.
And one day this kid looks up at the cards and says "10 is just 2 groups of 5!"
