" BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday. "

I think Materazzi is lying about the terrorist part, and about the mother part. That's a twofer :p in lying.

Red Card?

Ref never heard it.

too bad the ref didn't see Zidane's hit either

right, but you can catch a headbutt on camera, while it's next to impossible to catch a player saying something on camera.

Italy guy insults French soccer player, French player headbutts him, Italian guy wins the world cup. Zidane is seen as an asshole who cost his team the world cup.

Fixed.

WOW :Q that really is a low blow. But Zidane should have kept his cool till after the game. But again, I guess he had every right to be pissed off.

Zizou responds

Zinedine Zidane has apologised for the headbutt on Italy's Marco Materazzi which earned him a red card in Sunday's World Cup final penalty shoot-out loss. But the France legend did not reveal what Materazzi said, only confirming that it was "very personal" and concerned his mother and his sister.

Ummm the guy apparently wished his family a horrible death and called him a son of a terrorist, knowing that Zidane's mother is a practicing Muslim and was in the hospital extremely sick that day. I think that is getting a little out of the context of trash talking, don't you think?

For those of you (probably many) that don't know about Materazzi's history, he's quite well-known in Serie A (the Italian premier league) for being a crude, rough tackler who often doesn't go for the ball at all and then plays off contact as accidental. It wouldn't seem too out of the ordinary if he actually does talk as dirty as he plays.
