*rolls his eyes*
I just can't believe someone would file a descrimination complaint regarding the labeling of computer hardware.
Let that be a lesson to people that know nothing about hardware to learn something** :)

I'm sure you've read that article before but man, thats just crazy.

It seems downright ludacris seeing as SATA is here and there are will soon no longer be "masters" or "slaves".

When I was working in the petro-chemical industry, our unit superintendent made us quit using the term male and female threads on bolts and pipe fittings. She wanted us to use the terms internal and external threads.

What are the plumbers going to do about their nipples?

SCSI doesn't have the former problem.

The world we live in today...

Actually, when I first learned about computer components in '99 I thought these terms were kind of crude.

Great, so now we can all expect to pay $5 to $10 more for all hard drives forever because of a senseless lawsuit that profits lawyers only.

IMO that makes you an extremely snesitive person, and frankly, the whole world just can't adapt to a few very sensitive people.
And no, that's not meant as a flame or anything.

Anybody who gets offended by "master" and "slave" references to hardware componates is a FVKING MORON.

Anybody who then decides that a person, who thinks such terms have anything to do with race, is worth listening to, much less creating legislation (even on some pathetic little county level) is a even bigger moron.

A both types of people are probably bigots themselves.

Why?

Because the first thing that jumped to their minds is that is a racist comment and insesitive. A person who automaticly jumps to that conclusion has in continually thinking about everything in terms of Black people and White people. That's what rasists do. A non-rascist person will occasionally think about that stuff when the situation warrents it, but not in a normal course of a day.

And more then likely those freaks are completely INSANE.

A normal person of normal intellegence and is sane doesn't think in terms like that. A sane person who sees labels like that on hardware (and doesn't understand) automaticly wonders why something would be labeled "master" and "slave" in the first place. Not that it has anything remotely to do with slavery from over a century and a half ago.

Just like the first time you saw the reference to 2 wire ends called "male" and "female" ends. Then you looked at the wire and saw the end with they pointy things (male) goes into the end with the holes (female). It just makes sense.

That is a reasonable and sane response.

The following is not a reasonable and sane response and the person who thinks like this is probably a idiot and should be ignored completely in this context:

"OMG! That wire is further example of how a male dominated sociaty automaticly and subconciously assumes that a female (here represented as a RECEPTICAL) is incomplete without a male-figure injecting his masculenity and control/dominance (here representated by a phalic symbolic PLUG and it's electronic SEMEN) over her. This sort of references only further enforce the stereotypical viewpoint about female relatio...." BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Ya, that's why we refer to wire ends with adapters as "transgender" or "transexual" ends.

Not necessarily. SATA is sweeping up quickly, as someone noted in here. Also, it pointed out that only a few were actually going to do that:p.

In my opinion, they should change their own cables' labels if they're so offensive to one person. A relative said the world should point and laugh at California for this nonsense :).

I'm also offended by the day labeled "Black Friday." Why does it have to be black? Is it because the mechandise is so cheap it feels like you are stealing? ;)

yes, you are right. but you know, to be honest about it, things like that happen, because we allow it to. you have these so called. for the people groups out here. such as naacp, aclu, and so on, that need to be concerned with the real problems that are facing our nation rather then issues that bother 1 or 2 people. i think we need to file a complaint about them, and see if we can get anything done. LOL

It's true that the words master and slave are rarely used anymore and someone who isn't into technical stuff might be surprised to see them in use.

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that it's wrong in any way. Master and slave are pretty simple, self-explanatory words, that had meaning before Africans were enslaved in America, and continue to retain those meanings today.

We should outlaw the words "whip" and "plantation" too!

OMG, ROFLMAO

Yeah, but read the rest of it:

Dennis Tafoya, director of the affirmative action office, said in a separate memo that an "exhaustive search" had been undertaken to find all such labels and replace them with more "appropriate" ones. A form was sent to all departments to identify equipment carrying the labels "master" and "slave" or any other offensive terms.

Faced with an avalanche of complaints from vendors and the general public, Sandoval told Reuters in an interview that his memo was intended as "nothing more than a request" and not an ultimatum or policy change.

"I do understand that this term has been an industry standard for years and years and this is nothing more than a plea to vendors to see what they can do," he said. "It appears that some folks have taken this a little too literally."

Sandoval said that he had already rejected a suggestion that the county stop buying all equipment carrying the "master" and "slave" labels and had no intention of enforcing a ban on such terms with suppliers.

Sounds to me like this guy doesn't really want to do this. I'm sure WE all have had to do something that we really didn't want to.

Just wish someone also had the balls to just tell the "unidentified offended worker" to STFU.

Actually, this is the land of the free, and that person can be offended all they want, but doesn't mean people should take them seriously.

pathetic....very pathetic....

LOL, first thing I thought when I saw that was "What about 'Male' and 'Female' connectors?" then scrolled down and saw that the first replay said that...

People need to seriously lighten up. Slavery no longer exists in US. Anywhere I have been, all races have been treated equally, except for one incident I can think of, carried out by some very small group of drunks. Now the activists who are supposedly trying to mend the damages are just try to get attention. They don't have anything to complain about. We fought a freakin war over it; white people died to free slaves. What do the great-grandkids of those same people do? Complain against people who had nothing to do with any of it. It's ridiculous.

And "cable" too!

After all, "cable" implies a connection that has something attached to both ends, kind of like a slave attached to a master. :D
