Its good that they are finally admitting this is going to happen. The question is will they have advanced notice(1 day, 2 days, 3 days) when its coming and will they tell the public. :hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm:

thought it was the world was going to end because the magnetism of the north and south poles were going to reverse.

and whats w/the lame cartoonish avartar? i liked the old one better

That's it, I'm converting to some religion so I can be saved, although I'm still deciding which one has the best golden parachute.

And that 100 gazillion nukular bombs, probably total energy for the storm and in the cosmic scale, means nothing. Spread that out in a sheet and when it hits Earth, minor annoyances.

I <3 sunsational journalism.

fixed.

CME - Coronal Mass Ejection. Sounds dirty....heehee (I'm like 12)

Anyway, I think a global disaster is just what this country needs. Most people in America now are self-centered, whiny, weak, spoiled little pussys and something like this will toughen us up some....

The only thing that might be interesting but is a wild guess and i am sure it's wrong, is that when the planets and the sun align with the center of the milky way a kind of gravity field forms where the CME becomes focused. Similar as gravity lenses. Instead of the material being spread out the earth receives a bundled stream of material. It's just pure speculation and fantasy though..

Let's just hope that our magnetic poles don't decide to switch positions again right at that moment!

Well, that could be the result. The solar flares after that start the mutation wave that will end in mutagenesis when the earths field is restored. ^_^
So much movies i still have and want to see...

That it is.🙂
If all the planets, and the galactic core, and every last asteroid magically got in a straight line, with Earth in the firing line, I still don't think the gravitational impact wouldn't be anywhere close to significant.

The only people who are actually concerned about planetary alignment are:
- Astrologers, who operate on some dedicated sense of superstitious idiocy with no basis in reality.
- Astronomers when they're trying to do some kind of occlusion study of a distant star, and in this case, they're only concerned about the positioning of Earth, the other planet, and the distant star.
- Planetary scientists who are planning the route of a probe that'll use gravitational assist. In that case, the planets are only "aligned" in the sense that they'll be in the proper position when the probe gets there, which is nowhere close to being a straight line.

Don't worry, it's 2024-2027 you have to worry about, not 2012.

Now those were are will be some terrible years.
Why's that?

They can't predict a regular storm on Earth 2 weeks from now with any accuracy and I'm supposed to believe they can predict a solar one 2 years from now and how it will impact Earth? lulz...good one.

That's 2006.

Here's something from last year.

There's more of course. All that's being said is that Solar Cycle 24 shows a probability of higher than normal activity which in turn means the chances of more frequent and powerful storms exists. That's the "consensus", not that we're going to be wiped out.

The real concern is that we've done like we always do and not prepare for the obvious because of ignorance and cost.

Stupidity and foolishness is far more dangerous than this Cycle.

depends where you are when it happens. people in the burbs have a good chance of last quite a while without electrical.

no, the only people with a good chance are well-armed farmers in the middle of nowhere, and only if they have lots of low-tech tools like a horse-drawn plow and a river.

my guess is that the united states of america would cease to exist after a week of no electricity. 2 weeks max. every city and suburb would be depleted of food and water within days, with total anarchy everywhere and millions dying within the first couple days of an attempted exodus.

Have sextant, will travel fine. :awe:

Can you shield a transformer?

Yes you can and many are to reduce EM emission. However as long as they are connected to wiring they will be vulnerable. Anything electrical at that point would be as a matter of fact.

I think that's apples and oranges.

"They can't tell me if it's going to rain in 2 weeks, but you expect me to believe they can mange to predict eclipses and meteor showers years in advance?"

Yes, the transmission lines are effectively huge loops of wire through which the electromagnetic flux from the solar flares pass; by Faraday's Law, this induces the DC currents that travel through the transmission lines and the transformers they are attached to.

These induced currents are very small, but the fact that they are DC in a system built for AC means that they can be troublesome. Problems due to saturation of transformer cores (increased heating and possible loss-of-life) and false relay tripping (DC current sensed as unexpected ground current) are most common.

Utilities have been taking measures to prevent these kinds of problems as experience with solar events is gained.
