Its good that they are finally admitting this is going to happen. The question is will they have advanced notice(1 day, 2 days, 3 days) when its coming and will they tell the public. :hmm::hmm::hmm::hmm:

They claim satellites will be aged by 50 years, rendering GPS even more useless than ever, and the blast will have the equivalent energy of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

While I don't doubt the power of solar storms, there's quite a bit of "falling sky!" in this article.

"Rendering GPS even more useless than ever"?

What? GPS is pretty useful IMO, but that's just me.

That settled it. I'm leaving my family and heading to Vegas for a year long bender.

Who wants to come with me and snort coke off of some hookers' tits?

That's hardly a question considering there aren't any either answers except hell yes.

Are you arguing that it couldn't cause extended electrical blackouts?(1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks+)

I'm arguing against the journalistic integrity of that article.

There might be a solar storm coming. It might be big. Given the lead time we have, I'd hope people who are informed on these matters (protecting power grids and the like) take appropriate measures to minimize damage.

I agree, they should be doing that kind of investigative journalism....I want to know what is being done for a worst case scenarios.

That's it, I'm converting to some religion so I can be saved, although I'm still deciding which one has the best golden parachute.

And that 100 gazillion nukular bombs, probably total energy for the storm and in the cosmic scale, means nothing. Spread that out in a sheet and when it hits Earth, minor annoyances.

I <3 sensational journalism.

See? DaveSimmons came up with that in a matter of minutes, presumably just hitting nasa.gov or google.

But it doesn't make for a juicy headline like "OMGZ!!! 100 MILLION NUKULAR BOMBS" that the 'journalist' chose.

It still assumes there will be advanced notice and their are contingencies in place.

The subject of the OT is garbage. Simply an article written to sensationalize something that we know has happened countless times in the past & will continue to happen countless times into the future.

My concern's not so much for the satellites, but for the effects of a direct hit from a sizable CME, like another Carrington Event. From what I've seen, thoroughly toasting the power grid would pretty much bring the country to a dead stop for quite a few months.

GPS will be more useless than ever?

Are they useless in the first place? What? Huh?

Also, better stock up on ammo and weaponry and build underground cities and fortresses to protect your well being and life. Better find a way to produce power and have artificial underground plant gardens with artificial lighting.

Wasn't there a movie about this with Nicholas Cage? "Numbers" I think it was?

There was an episode of Stargate SG-1 that was about this. That one where they went back in time.

I want to know what is being done for a worst case scenarios.

I'm hoarding bullets and MREs. Edit: Also TP. I believe TP will become the new currency after the collapse of society.

in other news, the US east coast will be hit by 14 hurricanes next year, california will have a 9.0 earthquake, dogs and cats will start living together, human sacrifices, and the worst part? We dont have any unlicensed nuclear particle accelerators to wear on our backs!!

Dr Richard Fisher, director of NASA's Heliophysics division, told Reneke the super storm would hit like "a bolt of lightning", causing catastrophic consequences for the world's health, emergency services and national security unless precautions are taken.

He sounds like an expert to listen to.
