Massive pothole damage :(

I would not say the the OP was too close. I drove in NYC for over 20 years and know the crappy roads they had / still have. I lost 2 tires on the FDR underpass northbound near 96th street. Something on the road, sliced them both down. Never did see it and I was not the only car that had hit it that night. You can try and make the city pay, but it is a long shot at best. You are looking at about $1500 or so in repairs, counting 2 tires, 2 rims, possibly damage to brakes, hopefully just a front end alignment or at worst, replacing bent parts (like tie rods) ... and that is presuming no body work damage.
 
If you haven't driven in NYC then you shouldn't blame the OP for hitting the pothole. That stretch of road where he hit is terrible. If it's as big as he says it is then there isn't much you can do other than avoid that lane. That area where they are doing construction is so narrow you can barely fit two cars in there. Forget driving 2 SUVs next to each other. There is no way to swerve and avoid these things.

I have low profile tires and I've wrecked two tires in potholes so I watch out for them like a hawk but despite doing it, I always seem to hit them. Even when I do see them, oftentimes there isn't much I can do to avoid them. It is sometimes better to hit them than to swerve and possibly cause an accident.
 
I bent and cracked 2 AMG monoblocks in NYC (on the FDR somewhere near downtown), still have no idea how that happened. It was the 2 rear ones (18x9.5) on my CLK, beefy as rims too.

NYC is el terrible for driving or living in general.

My brother died in a plane crash a few years ago. Both engines failed over the Atlantic and he died. And I was like serves you right sucker, you should have personally inspected those engines before even boarding the thing.

This is why when my daughter had to get brain surgery for a partial hemispherectomy I researched and performed it myself so that I knew it would be done right. Take charge and stop blaming!

I think it is the second rule of AT... the OP is ALWAYS at fault.
 
BTW MrsSkoorb I believe did the final do-in on our vans struts going between some construction area a couple years ago. Instead of a gradual lip I think the crew just didn't give a sh*t and she said the bump was horrific. That was in NY but not NYC!
 
Finally replaced the tires yesterday. It cost ~$400 (380 for tires from TireRack + 20 to install) for everything to fix, so it didn't kill me. Turns out the "break" I saw in the rim was some kind of oil that splattered on it -- the rims look absolutely perfect and ding/scratch free.

The sound went away -- I don't know what it was. It might have been the rim scratching the floor? (But there was no scratches...) The car is turning fine now, it may have been the dead tire causing the problem.

The tires hit right in the middle and broke from the inside -- it was like a flaky dusty mess inside the both of them. 🙁

On the bright side - I now have 3 brand new tires on my car. 🙂 I am considering replacing the 4th for good measure, but I am turning the car in to get something new in 2 months. 🙂 Besides, the car only has 8530 miles - I am sure that 4th tire is still ok.

I feel like if you have to shell out 500 on repairs to your car caused by bad roads, you should get the next 500 dollars of traffic tickets, parking tickets, etc. waived in that city.
 
I love the "more space" idiots on here whenever an accident is brought up. I've never driven in NY. But in Cali if you have more than 2 car lengths between you and the car in front of you, somebody will definitely be cutting in. You simply cannot maintain much distance between the car your behind. If OP was going 45 he probably couldn't have avoided the pot hole even if he slammed on his breaks, and if he had done that I bet the car behind him would have rear ended him. Because I seriously doubt OP thought to himself "you know, I could stop but I'd rather barrel on and hit this pot hole doing extensive damage to my car!" Maintain a "safe distance" is a fairytale in you live in any big city.

I want to know where these magical places that ATOT fuckers live where you always can have 4+ car lengths between you and another car and always avoid an accident.
 
What QueBert says is very true, even in NY, NYC, LI and NJ ... I drive in NJ all the time and used to live in Queens, NY, so I was driving the roads of NYC & LI all the time. You just cannot keep the space you want on the highway.

Haha QFT. They should try and do that in DFW, I guarantee they'd be driven off the road in no time.
