Massive pothole damage :(

Arrrgh, I hate the Bronx this time of year. I was driving about 45mph and was following the flow of traffic, when the car in front of me stopped suddenly and swerved into the next lane.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the option of swerving, or I'd risk running into someone, and I slammed! into the pothole. It busted both passenger side tires instantly and lost control of the car for a split second, but was never in any real danger.

I had no choice but to keep driving (no shoulder to pull over on) and had to limp at slow speed to the next exit.

Lo and behold -- as I am driving uphill my car is making an awful screeching sound and the rims look bent. I just bought these tires too. :( They were two weeks old.

*sigh* I am deciding whether or not to go through insurance (my deductible is $500, and the tires alone without rims will be $450 + I don't even know wtf the sound is that the car is making. I swear the car feels much harder to turn now also.

I am only 3 months away from turning it in (lease will be over) too...lol

Arrgh, I'll deal with this shit tomorrow. Maybe I'll upload a video of the damage and the sound. I am sure I damaged the underbody of the car also, but it is too dark right now to get any real pictures or see anything. :(

arrgh...fuck you NY.

Sucks. However, hopefully you've learned a lesson about following too closely.

Read again, I wasn't following too closely. It was 2 lanes, and I chose to hit the pothole rather than sideswipe someone. :\

in NY, theres always another option, follow farther behind, or find a way to avoid both the pothole and the other car.

Where in the OP did it say I was tailgating. I had the option to either slam the pothole, or sideswipe my car. No one was in front of me.

At the speed I was going I was already commited.

Sucks to hear man. Can't you get this fixed and get a bill or estimate and deal with the city? I am pretty sure you can do that here in Toronto, after all it's their responsibility.

I downloaded the form they require already. I need a Police report done + pictures + witnesses + they want copies of my lease agreements, registration, insurance...etc.

Fuck them.

Haha, gotta love when people on the internets think they know the situation better than the guy there. Yeah, everything can always be avoided....if we knew something was about to happen before it actually did. We have no idea the real situation of anything that happened, so don't be a dick and try to bash the man who obviously feels he did the correct thing by not sideswiping another car and rather making his own car take the beating. <3 amdhunter, good luck man!

Damn that sucks!

I hit a massive pothole on the FDR in February, 1 month after I got my car and bubbled both driver's side tires. Fortunately I bought tire and rim insurance and it covered the replacement no questions asked. The bill came out to be $900+!

lol, I hit on the Deegan at the exit where you can hit the Cross Bronx. They are doing construction on the area and they shifted the lanes into the "shoulder" area.

My choices were literally, sideswipe the guy next to me, or sideswipe concrete wall. I'll assess the damage tomorrow.

I bought 2 tires from Tirerack and they should be here by Wednesday. :) I should have bought their pothole warranty before lol.

Only 3 months to go with this car, so I don't care how damaged it is... D:

If it happened in California on a state highway, you could file a claim with the California Department Of Transportation. If it's a known (maintenance forces have patched it in the past) pothole, they'd likely pay.

if you popped both tires, you probably bent the wheels, too.

judging by the severity of the impact and the fact that you say the steering feels different, you probably bent the strut and/or lower control arm, also. make sure the car gets properly checked out.

That area is terrible. I took it a few weeks ago not knowing they moved the concrete barriers and shifted the lanes. It's tough enough to drive there with the narrow lanes but with other cars next to you, it's downright scary.

Holy shit! I went through that area, coming from the Triboro, and I thought I was going to die! They really need to put some signs up or something. Whoever is fixing that area really needs to be slapped in the face.

Yep. I am going to inspect everything closer tomorrow. I already ordered new tires from TireRack, and the nearest Flat Fix is only 2 blocks away from me.

I might jack the car up myself and roll the wheels to the flat fix to make things easier. My bro-in-law's best friend is going to look the car over over the weekend for more damage.

easiest way to check for something bent is with a tape measure. check the distance between the tire and the back edge of the wheelwell on both sides. you're likely to find a difference.

uh, it sounds like his only option was to slam on the brakes. and he may have had someone BEHIND him (not his fault) or simply may not have had much time (headlight range < braking distance from any decent speed).

I had space - and even saw the damn thing. I chose to hit it, rather than kill someone next to me, or run my car into the wall.

More space wouldn't have mattered shit. Idiot in front of me swerved because he saw it last minute...I wanted to do the same, but couldn't. I guarantee others will hit it just the same tonight.

I'd even put money on it killing someone tonight.

Guys, it's Louisssssssssss. Ignore him. There's a reason he's been vacationed repeatedly and it's not for being too warm, fuzzy, and helpful.

Sorry to hear about the car. That's really rough. Follow the file-with-the-city route. The way it works around here you probably will just be getting the money for the repair when you hit the 3 month turn in on your lease car.

Can you still file a police report after having left the scene?

You were too close. It had nothing to do with the road. It's like the time I was going through a green light and got t-boned. It was obviously my fault for not stopping at all green lights and making sure nobody was coming through the red. I mean that's just common sense.

My brother died in a plane crash a few years ago. Both engines failed over the Atlantic and he died. And I was like serves you right sucker, you should have personally inspected those engines before even boarding the thing.

This is why when my daughter had to get brain surgery for a partial hemispherectomy I researched and performed it myself so that I knew it would be done right. Take charge and stop blaming!
