Reports I saw indicate it was in port so chems would make sense.

Looks like there are couple sizable oil/fuel complexes next to coal storage and other assured industry nearby. An explosion of that size has to be a tank farm or a tanker I'd think.

Edit: Chinese government says explosive shipments in the container terminal and that the fires are "under control"….right. Reports a secondary explosion came from an oil facility.

Damn! Yeah, that looked like petro/chem going up as a fuel air explosive. Little boom vaporized something into the air and then set it off.

In one of the videos I saw, it took 5 seconds for the blast to reach the camera. It takes a lot of guts to continue to aim the camera when you know a huge shockwave is coming for you.

You make the assumption people know a wave is coming. I was waiting for it, and was surprised it took so long. It took about 6.5-7 seconds for the boom to hit, so it was just over a mile away. That was a big explosion.

They say that everything is bigger in China, and that was a massive series of explosions all right. I can't wait to breathe all those toxins in the air a few days from now. And I certainly would be having a nervous breakdown right now if I was in the middle of that disaster trying to put out fires and rescue people.

This is what happens when you have a runaway economy that is growing exponentially with little or nonexistent oversight from the government.

Next up: China wants to rush and build multiple LARGE nuclear power reactors right next to each other that even the engineers there are afraid of because of cost cutting, not following the design specifications and lax government oversight. I'm sure that's going to end well. You ain't seen nothing yet.

Details from the local, Gas station exploded -> ignited two oil tanks nearby the chemical warehouse -> chemical exploded, the firefighters failed to put it out and a series of explosions triggered by the chemicals in the container terminal(Ethanol and others), all firefighters/police, people who watching nearby die on scene.
The fact that chemical is concentrated in that area, people panic and concerns the releasing of toxic gases after the explosion, many evacuating caused road jam.
People from 10km away can feel the shockwave, windows shattered. The Donghai Road station is destroyed.
They said no one is alive within 1km in diameter, the explosions happened in tanggu district which is residential area still in developing.
The total population of Binhai is 2.5 millions and the population density in the area is expected 2000/kmsq, expected injuries/casualties will be around 7000~70000.
There were two explosions, the first one is equals to 3 tons of TNT and the second one is 21 tons.

It's kind of crazy that we're watching people literally die on twitter... like seeing them die not just the explosion.
