As far as I know, a verbal contract has as much power as a signed contract, provide the one who break the contract is not lying.

I only have to compensate you for the time and materials invested. I do NOT have to compensate you for work you did not do since our contract did not stipulate such.

Where in the contract or verbal agreement does it say you have to compensate him for the time and materials invested? Did you make that up? Why should you compensate him for anything?
