As far as I know, a verbal contract has as much power as a signed contract, provide the one who break the contract is not lying.

So what? If you show up drunk, or rape his daughter you think he is still obligated to pay you after he's fired you for it? LOL, fail.

Where in the contract or verbal agreement does it say you have to compensate him for the time and materials invested? Did you make that up? Why should you compensate him for anything?
