I am looking for a mass ID3 editing utility. I know there is one incorporated for admins in Netjuke, but I'm looking for something a little more local... and for Windows.

I plan on using it in combination with PowerRen 2000 (allows you to rename/organize Mp3s according to several variables, including artist/album/etc., as well as Mass file renaming) to organize my Mp3s.

There are too many ID3 tag editors out there to cover here :)
Hang out in alt.music.mp3, post the question, and stand back :)
I use Tag&Rename but there are at least a dozen more.
Some folks like MPTagger.
Some like ID3 Tagit.
There are others but those are often recommended.

Any of those free? Or happen to have a key for Tag&Rename that I can view for reasons not concerning piracy?

don't ask for warez / cracks / keys on AT. This is a no-software-piracy zone.

Well geewhiz SmooveB, I really expected you to use the links I provided and visit the sites. I'ts customary in the AT forums (any forums actually), that if someone puts up a link that you visit it before asking more questions. So, please, feel free to use those links; that's why I dug them up for you. And, as I stated, you might also hang out at alt.music.mp3.

Correct Dave, sharing is for mp3's; can't say the same for the NGs tho.

No problemo SmooveB. Good luck with your tags, and again, check out alt.music.mp3; there's more mp3 stuff going on there than you can absorb:)

Just had to thank mariner for mentioning Tag&Rename - I downloaded it, and it is a GREAT program - even does CDDB lookups so that you can correct/add ID3 tags on older MP3 albums. Very nice program - thanks for pointing it out !

Where exactly is alt.music.mp3? Thought it might be a URL but isn't... Is it an AnandTech thing?

alt.music.mp3 is a news group. You can use Lookout Express to access it if you're an IE user.

Well, mariner.....you got lucky for once. :)

OK.....was Tag&Rename the one that Maximum PC liked a few months ago....that did reverse lookup?

SmooveB--I've had luck, when I've been without a newsreader, to use a freebie URL that reads groups. I don't remember which one. I just did a google search and tried a few. It took me about 5 trys with different ones before I found one that worked for me. I probably searched "newsgroup reader".

Google Groups will let you read news groups but may not be the best, and there seems to be a considerable delay for new messages to be posted. Randypj, you passed it right up, as usual;-)

I'll have to dig out that MaxPC and check. I know, I know, I said I would do that weeks ago. Crimony, some folks have to work at work;-)

I've been tinkering with another tag editor, MP3-Tag Studio. It is similar to T&R in ability but is slightly more difficult to master. I like both. Tag Studio is no-obligation, no-time-limit shareware.

Geez, tenacious arn't we randypj;)

Ok, from MaxPC, June '01, they recommend Tag & Rename. Fair enuf, it's a good utility. I have found MP3-Tag Studio very similar in ability for my purposes: cleaning up ID3 tags and file names from an asortment of files I downloaded. However, I don't think you can grab individual file data from CDDB with MP3-Tag Studio or Tag & Rename.

mariner--Geez....up late last night, eh? Had a nice nap yesterday while I was working? :)

Well.....since you seem to be the mp3 expert.....um.....at least my expert, anyway.......riddle me this:

I know with T&R, you can do reverse lookup.....which is what caught my eye about it.

so, if I rip songs from an LP to my hard drive:

1. Can I use a feature to name the files.....lookup the cd in cddb, then name them? I think so.
2. Course, since it is an LP, not a cd, chances are the correct names will be there, but a good possiblity that they will be in the wrong order, and there may be more or less songs than what cddb reports (since it is derived from the cd, not the LP).
3. In this case, does one of the programs allow you to sort of drag and drop the tag info, onto the specific files you choose? Kinda like an explorer interface?
4. Have you used EAC/LAME/and a naming program, to burn a backup of the cd OTF, while simultaneously ripping/encoding/naming mp3s from that cd to the hard drive?
5. Of course, my goal would be to store my original, purchased cds in my father's fireproof safe, and store my backup cds in my closet, playing only from mp3s on my audio system.

OK, randypj, here is the solution to your questions. Go grab both programs, install them, tinker with them. You have 30 days with T&R and an unlimited time with Tag Studio. I have little experience with hitting CDDB 'cept with EAC/LAME when I rip/encode. I don't think T&R will let you hit CDDB with single files; you must have the entire CD (and I think the files have to be in the correct order). I have not tried to CDDB with an LP rip. I don't even know if you can rip an LP into separate tracks; maybe only as an entire album?? There has been some discussion of this on alt.music.mp3, that I didn't pay enuf attention to. You can also visit Allen Reny's place for some insights into restoring LPs.

And, if i'm your expert then you're in more trouble than I thought;-)
