78% on RT, blah

From what I've heard, the major weakness isn't terribly surprising -- a weak villain in an origin story. Marvel villains are usually pretty lame and not compelling.

As for the movie, I'll probably check it out during a local theater's discount day. Lots of people there, but the tickets are $5 vs. $9.75.

I don't need to see Age Of Ultron before watching this one do I? I assume not, but want to make sure I am not missing out on anything.

Agreed, for the most part. They are even managing to make Thanos somewhat weak, and certainly not all that compelling right now. Which sucks, because I have such fond memories of his badassery.

The new Magneto is awesome--and I like McKellen, but I never liked his Magneto.

I think one of their villains that has maybe been overlooked for a while now is DeFoe's Goblin in the first Spiderman. He was freaking awesome. Granted, these aren't part of Marvel's official work, but the IP does have very good villains, if properly utilized. ...if properly utilized. Look what the shit happened to Doom. :D

I doubt it. I assume the only thing related will be the mid-credits clip or end-credits teaser.

Though I imagine you might see some Scarlet Witch or even Hawkeye or something? I have no idea, really.

Fassbender is fucking awesome as Magneto! I also think MacAvoy is very good as Professor X; they are great together too.

I do like MacAvoy in those, but I still prefer Captain Picard. I feel that Stewart is probably the only actor that should ever be cast for that role.

I know he's supposed to be young and inexperienced, but I don't like MacAvoy's naivete, whining, and general nerfing of his powers.

Picard's Xavier was/is as truly powerful as Xavier is supposed to be. Hell: he came back from a death that vaporized all of his physical molecules. :D

Even the young, inexperienced Magneto is terrifyingly powerful and brilliantly insane.

From what I've heard, the movie has some weak tying into the MCU, but that's probably not surprising since Edgar Wright, the original director, didn't plan on this movie necessarily meshing in.

I don't think it's an issue with power though. Plenty of villains have a lot of strength, but they feel more like a plot device than a character. Most people's favorite villain (as of late) is probably The Joker from The Dark Knight, and I was sitting here trying to think about why. I know it was a good performance and such, but there's more to it than that. I think it has to do a bit with the way the story was written. Throughout The Dark Knight, Batman is arguably playing a game of cat and mouse with The Joker, but Joker is arguably a few steps ahead of Bruce almost the entire time. In other words, the main character isn't in control.

Some of the Marvel movies do that too (Thor 1 with Thor on Earth, Iron Man 3 with the broken-down suit, etc.), but the difference is... these events just further the main character and not the villain.

The new Magneto is awesome--and I like McKellen, but I never liked his Magneto.

I don't know... I just can't really get into the newer X-Men movies. Don't get me wrong as I think Fassbender is good.

I think one of their villains that has maybe been overlooked for a while now is DeFoe's Goblin in the first Spiderman. He was freaking awesome. I think my only complaint about DaFoe's Green Goblin was that it felt a little too cheesy. I'd really prefer if a lot of the humor in a Spider-Man movie came from Peter, but having the villains provide a bit of their own when need be would be great too. Spider-Man 2 worked well with Doc Ock. My only complaint would be that they did a good job setting him up, but they really got lazy near the middle. Although, they kind of redeemed it a bit near the end with him sacrificing himself.

EDIT:

Picard's Xavier was/is as truly powerful as Xavier is supposed to be. Hell: he came back from a death that vaporized all of his physical molecules. :D

To be fair, Charles didn't pull a Dr. Manhattan and reassemble himself. :p He transferred his consciousness to his comatose brother, which has been retconned by the latest movie anyway!

This a big scene during the middle of the movie that probably won't have the same impact if you didn't see AoU but no, you don't need to see AoU for any story bits.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I thought the same when they were doing the toy fight but they kept the best parts out of the trailer.

Yep, agreed.

Thought it was ok, but none of the shoe-horned relationship or family crap worked and overall it was just a typical origin story that hit all of the same beats as many previous flicks. I'd give it a 6/10 at most.

I have been having a serious problem with hollywood with this for years. Trailers have become a way to download the damn story into sheeple so when they show up at the movie they know what to cheer and expect. God forbid people have to think for themselves when they see a film.

I just saw the Teaser trailer to that new Dicaprio film. 5 mins long and it showed more than the ant man one and that one was a TEASER. What are they gonna do in the actual trailer? Show every other frame of the entire film?

Ant Man ranks up there with Au-qua Man for complete lack of cool super powers. Not sure which one has less cool powers.
