Marvel changing their iconic super heros in the name of diversity

JEDI

Lifer
Capt America is now black.
Thor is now female.
Iron man (now Iron Heart) is a black female.

and lastly:
Hulk is now an Asian male.
(bruce banner is dead, for now.)

I feel less connected to them.
I grew up for decades with the originals.

How do you feel about this?

It's easier to get attention for established, iconic charcters than create new ones. The constant reinvention of characters, the crossovers, and retconning is why I stopped caring about Marvel and DC when I was about 10.

Yep, it has always been this way, has always been terrible, and has always been just about the dolla bills. Instead of merely killing some well-known character for the fifth time they're killing them and having them come back black. Still don't care.

Though now I'm imagining the Wolverine we've always known, except with boobs, and I am not unamused.

"I feel less connected to them."

And conversely, that's the reaction the many markets who are NOT white males had to them before these changes. It's historical white hegemony why they were almost all white males before.

Admittedly, 'why not just make new characters'?

But the fact is, decades of history make these more established, and there was racial bias in the history that is being undone by changes - it's not just expanding markets.

Here's an idea: do what you expect non-white males to do, and learn to appreciate characters that aren't your gender and race (and I don't just mean female characters to drool over).

What exactly were you connected to about these characters? You aren't a billionaire, playboy alcoholic that created a super suit to fight crime. You aren't the product of a government program to enhance you into a super soldier. You aren't a doctor that was exposed to gamma radiation and mutated into a monster. The only thing you have in common with any of these guys is you're both white. Well, you have the exact same amount of things in common with Hitler.

The reason we dont have loads of iconic black characters is because the 50 plus years of hideous racism in that industry kinda prevented it from ever happening.

Having said that, I dont agree the current icons should be changed just for the sake of political correctness.
BUT, remember that the comic industry is like any other, they exist to make money. You make more money by coddling your customers even if they are stupid or insane.

If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it. Instead of changing all the genders and cultures, make up better stories. I'm not being "racist" but it's irritating. If a character is black, don't make them white. If a character is white, leave it alone. Same if the character is female or male. I don't need it to be "appealing" to today's generation. I prefer for it to be authentic. All of the changing things in the movies, it's silly.

I agree with some of the others, if you want more diversity in the DC or Marvel universe, make new characters and integrate them into the major titles. Make some new storylines and crossovers......expand the stories and situations. When the companies take characters that everybody is familiar with and make big changes to them, it throws off the readers. When they change the characters, I'm not interested in the story because that story is not about the character that I'm familiar with. It's their business to make changes as they see fit....and it's my business to not support or buy their product if they make changes that I don't like. Just my .02....

It's fucking retarded, and I refuse to support this bullshit movement. Maybe we need to make Shaft white, or Kato a white girl. It's ridiculous. If you want a black, gay, black/gay character, create a NEW one. I'd be equally upset if they made Black Panther white. Just fucking stupid.

And oh, shocker, I'm not white so stop with the, "oh <certain people> can't relate because they aren't the same race AS A FREAKIN COMIC BOOK CHARACTER." I watch a comic book movie because I want to see a character true to its origin. The same character I grew up with. If you change the character's apearance and origin, IT AIN'T THE SAME CHARACTER.

This it just some bullshit political move, that I refuse to support. They are free to make whatever they want, but I'm not buying it.

I think that changing the sex or race of a character to make kids feel more connected is the wrong way to be raising our kids if we want them to end any sort of divide or racism. I think it's more of the parents insecurity realizing that their kids are watching something that might be all white cast with a couple token black or hispanic characters and get all pissy because they are probably racist themselves..

But then again.. The aren't in the market to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy, just make more money. I guess its just our job to tell our kids they can be anything they want to be regardless what they see in a movie..

What Marvel Hopes to Achieve with the Changing of Race/Gender in Pre-Existing Characters

I think diversity for the sake of diversity is silly, but I don't really care either way. I feel in general that organizations/etc are trying too hard at not being offensive, and people are trying too hard at being offended. It's a cat and mouse game.

You guys still call this political correctness for some reason. I think it has to do with a business trying to capture long untapped markets. On top of that, you have more minority individuals working in the industry than before.

Far too often, OWMSJWs (not you, shorty) cry and bitch about "Political Correctness"! when the real answer is that it's simply business. These characters have long been reinvented and tested in ways that bothered their fans, without ever having been criticized as being "politically corrected." The precedence is already there that this would happen and will continue to happen; and you don't make new characters because these characters already own huge markets of their own.

You keep as much of that market as you can, then try to expand it into new fans that might not have otherwise paid attention.

*now, waits for OroorOrroo or boomerang or some other OWMSJW to bitch and complain that such fans are the real racists for suddenly being interested in a character only because it "looks like them." 😀

Doesn't anyone remember Spawn and the broohaha when that first released?

I feel like asking you if you're actually still buying Marvel comics.
If you're not, I can't imagine them being overly concerned with your response.
If you are, then I suggest you vote with your wallet, and inform them on social media of why you're doing so.
And, of course, all those decades of back issues are still there for you to read, they haven't been retroactively changed.

If there's one thing the Thor comics have been known for, it's their slavish adherence to remaining canonical with the ancient Norse myths.
