China is our enemy, and their military is heavily involved in their space program. Anything that sets it back is a positive thing. The only good thing that can come from their space program is that it gives the US a kick in the ass and causes us to regain our competitive spirit.

And before anyone calls me cold-hearted, this was an unmanned launch. I wouldn't wish death on any man who's brave enough to strap himself to the top of a rocket, but I'd smile at an unmanned launch failure that left them the Chinese looking stupid.

+1 China is an enemy of the United States, no doubt about it. They're arming themselves for an eventual conflict with America.

We could excel right now if we didn't have a President that was so anti-science. I guess since NASA doesn't increase the number of people getting government assistance it really doesn't fit his agenda.

Really are you so delusional that to you our current president is anti-science? Oh well I don't know what I expect from idiotic trolls.

I am excited about this, going to see what interesting advances come from this new program. A long with what they are looking to discover

So they're what, close to half a century late? Lol.

Worst case scenario is we get a new space race.

It amuses me to simply turn the words of the left back upon them and their ilk and watch them squirm.

China is only our enemy if we want them to be. I'd prefer an even greater friendship. I think more Americans need to learn the history of the USA and China. I think we can get along just fine.

So, we're shutting down Fermilab, e've pretty much cut NASA down to almost nothing.....

Let's just admit it, we're fvcked. China is the new world superpower, give them the keys to all the nukes, and let them run the world. Seems like we aren't even trying any more over here in the states....

I prefer Chicago or Kraut dogs. And dear god don't put ketchup on them.

D:
Now we know that something is wrong with you, FNE. Ketchup on hotdogs FTW!

:p

On a more serious note, I would have less of a problem with the Chinese space program's intentions if it were a bit more transparent and not as closely linked with their military space program. Overall, I think that their, and other nations' progress in this area, are a benefit for humanity as a whole. We should be kicking our own scientific and exploratory efforts into high gear, but we stall on things like the SSC or the JWST that would have made us the world leaders again in these areas....

What does having a space station actually do for our national interests again?

We have been there, done that. China is playing catch-up on an unnecessary venture.

The real prize out there is a manned mission to mars. Let me know when that happens and I will give a shit.

I'd like to see NASA receive more money, but the real problem with our space program is a lack of direction. When you look at how much money has been squandered on canceled programs (X-33, Constellation, various planned shuttle successors) it's painfully sad to see that we could've done something great if we had a goal and just stuck with it.

actually its backwards. We dont fund nasa enough so instead of putting all their eggs in one big basket they decided to diversify the projects into smaller things hoping to get more small stuff done then possibly one large failure.

Because in science failures are sometimes as effective as a success in the knowledge gained. This doesnt make good news though

Exactly, if there is no immediate PROFIT it didn't matter anyway.

Just listen to all the parrots here when you ask them what is the most important thing in life they want.

and Polly wants it now!!!

China, welcome to 50 years ago

And now they can spend the next few decades doing yet more experiments on the effects of micro-gravity on ___________ (insert ridiculous concept or trivial organism) just as all we have done for years.

To the OP... you are a TOOL! It's call competitiveness ... If the USA doesn't wake up and start investing in SCIENCE/SPACE/TECHNOLOGY who's FAULT is that?????

Obama could talk all day long about creating 50million science / tech jobs. But you and I know the repugs would not go for that... so end of story there.

You probably didn't know China has the fastest computer in the world? And they are gaining by leaps and bounds while we here in the USA just sit around crying about it. They will keep growing and out pass us in the next 8-10 years. It all boils down to who has the fastest computers and science power.

Already, 70% of engineers with PhD’s who graduate from U.S. universities are foreign-born. Increasingly, these talented individuals are not staying in the U.S – instead, they’re returning home, where they find greater opportunities.

The statistics tell the story.
  • U.S. consumers spend significantly more on potato chips than the U.S. government devotes to energy R&D.
  • In 2009, for the first time, over half of U.S. patents were awarded to non-U.S. companies.
  • China has replaced the U.S. as the world’s number one high-technology exporter.
  • Between 1996 and 1999, 157 new drugs were approved in the U.S. Ten years later, that number had dropped to 74.
  • The World Economic Forum ranks the U.S. #48 in quality of math and science education.
That's pathetic!

Too stupid to understand science? Try religion! Keep voting your republican religious right in and watch china take the lead... Time to vote in an atheist I guess.

I honestly don't think he believes anything he post, hence a troll. He just puts it out the and then gets his jollies from the replies. Just put him on ignore and maybe he'll go away. He never adds anything constructive.

+1 China is an enemy of the United States, no doubt about it. They're arming themselves for an eventual conflict with America.

Tell us, oh farm animal who learned to use a computer, what that war will look like?

Will they simply launch a nuclear barrage at us, and receive one in return?

Now, that's a very plausible scenario of what they will think is in their interest.

Or maybe they'll build 10 million boats, and send a massive army across the Mexican border and take us over that way.

No, clueless, let's try another scenario.

The fact is, in our current world political system, might still makes money, if not right. Nations who can't defend themselves face problems. The US is no strangers, with its CIA operations for 60 years among other things, to arranging for its own interests, and if that means putting nations under tyranny, well, no problem.

China understands that as its economy surpasses that of the United States, and it wants to expand its own power and influence in Asia which will diminish that of the US, there will be conflicts. The US is facing deteriorating power in many areas - the one it still has a huge advantage is military power. This will create pressure on the US to use it more.

Wouldn't it make sense for China to be able to not be vulnerable? Would you like to trade places with them on military power?

If the US slashed its military spending, and the #2 military nation in the world doubled theirs, the US would still be spending $115 billion more.

Just maybe it makes a whole lot of sense for China to be prepared - and that doesn't mean 'they are preparing for starting a war with us'?

How warped are you to think the US can spend as much as the rest of the world combined on the military, the #1 arms supplier in the world, and that anyone who builds their own military in response to that is the 'aggressor who is preparing for war with us'? So our being completely dominant - why not say the rest of the world has to be disarmed - is the only 'fair' distribution of military power?

An effort was made after WWII to do SOMETHING about this, with the creation of the United Nations, its charter prohibiting nuclear war.

A charter last seen rolled next to the toilet in the Bush White House.

This is why we need not only 'peace studies', but politicians who will work for world peace, not only women in beauty pageants.

JFK, Jimmy Carter made some progress - but that's still the situation. It's a very armed world, and you need to get used to it until it's changed.

Calling anyone who arms in response to our massive military a warmonger doesn't help.

The things we pay, in the name of 'cutting spending' for the rich to have more.

+1 to your post. I very much support non-military scientific research spending.
