China is only our enemy if we want them to be. I'd prefer an even greater friendship. I think more Americans need to learn the history of the USA and China. I think we can get along just fine.
 
So, we're shutting down Fermilab, e've pretty much cut NASA down to almost nothing.....

Let's just admit it, we're fvcked. China is the new world superpower, give them the keys to all the nukes, and let them run the world. Seems like we aren't even trying any more over here in the states....

On a more serious note, I would have less of a problem with the Chinese space program's intentions if it were a bit more transparent and not as closely linked with their military space program. Overall, I think that their, and other nations' progress in this area, are a benefit for humanity as a whole. We should be kicking our own scientific and exploratory efforts into high gear, but we stall on things like the SSC or the JWST that would have made us the world leaders again in these areas....

What does having a space station actually do for our national interests again?

We have been there, done that. China is playing catch-up on an unnecessary venture.

The real prize out there is a manned mission to mars. Let me know when that happens and I will give a shit.

actually its backwards. We dont fund nasa enough so instead of putting all their eggs in one big basket they decided to diversify the projects into smaller things hoping to get more small stuff done then possibly one large failure.

Because in science failures are sometimes as effective as a success in the knowledge gained. This doesnt make good news though

Tell us, oh farm animal who learned to use a computer, what that war will look like?

Will they simply launch a nuclear barrage at us, and receive one in return?

Now, that's a very plausible scenario of what they will think is in their interest.

Or maybe they'll build 10 million boats, and send a massive army across the Mexican border and take us over that way.

The fact is, in our current world political system, might still makes money, if not right. Nations who can't defend themselves face problems. The US is no strangers, with its CIA operations for 60 years among other things, to arranging for its own interests, and if that means putting nations under tyranny, well, no problem.

China understands that as its economy surpasses that of the United States, and it wants to expand its own power and influence in Asia which will diminish that of the US, there will be conflicts. The US is facing deteriorating power in many areas - the one it still has a huge advantage is military power. This will create pressure on the US to use it more.

Wouldn't it make sense for China to be able to not be vulnerable? Would you like to trade places with them on military power?

If the US slashed its military spending, and the #2 military nation in the world doubled theirs, the US would still be spending $115 billion more.

Just maybe it makes a whole lot of sense for China to be prepared - and that doesn't mean 'they are preparing for starting a war with us'?

How warped are you to think the US can spend as much as the rest of the world combined on the military, the #1 arms supplier in the world, and that anyone who builds their own military in response to that is the 'aggressor who is preparing for war with us'? So our being completely dominant - why not say the rest of the world has to be disarmed - is the only 'fair' distribution of military power?

An effort was made after WWII to do SOMETHING about this, with the creation of the United Nations, its charter prohibiting nuclear war.

A charter last seen rolled next to the toilet in the Bush White House.

This is why we need not only 'peace studies', but politicians who will work for world peace, not only women in beauty pageants.

JFK, Jimmy Carter made some progress - but that's still the situation. It's a very armed world, and you need to get used to it until it's changed.

Calling anyone who arms in response to our massive military a warmonger doesn't help.
