I just looked at it. He doesn't actually hit it. It's super close and but he doesn't actually get hit by it.

Look at pic #3 I linked and find the wrench. You won't, because it's squarely buried in the lower-right of the pudgy plumber's hitbox. 😛

i noticed that, too. i think its becuase he hesitated for a second on that level. im sure he sits up at night and thinks "damn, i almost played The Perfect Game"

It is because he doesnt want to wate time to see the fireworks. Remeber he is racing against time, not for compleing the game.
