What I never understood is that the cost involved in creating that (has to be in the 10's of thousands at the least) would be hard to recoup since they had to expect that it would not stay hidden for long.

100 lbs should get them several hundred k.

At an 8 week cycle, roughly 1.3m a year.
If they sold it to clubs (bonus if they were a certified growere) they would make close to 3m.

ok, the 3m/year I could see, but 1m, I couldn't see it being worth the risk.

you build fancy like that to NOT get caught.. nobody ever builds something to plan on getting caught.. because being not hidden means getting caught.

that is a crapload of pot, and looks awesome
wonder how the feds got tipped off. better idea would have been to actually live out of that house and work in the caves themselves or with a few extra people to live there. would have seemed a bit more legit then having to bring immigrants in and drive vans into the cave and whatnot.

It's called a contingency plan. If you are involved in a regular activity that could get you busted (as opposed to one-off jobs), then you need a second plan, a large amount of cash saved.

i hope they had enough sense to use solar powered panels to power all the lights (i guess not, since they got caught, heh) since the narcotic police (what are they called again?) check "unusual" electric bills.

not really the contents of the cave, but can you imagine the partys?

i want a cave

So true. Who doesn't want their own underground lair!?

That plus infared scans from the air looking for hot spots.

That's fvcking cool. The hidden exit underneath the false rock is so badass. If I had a secret underground lair I'd build a freaking laser though!

Or maybe set it up as a sweet underground club.

I think the more interesting this is how did they get it built with out raising questions?

Maybe they didn't. From the original article it seems authorities became suspicious when a house was built over the entrance to part of the cave. Plus they blocked off the other entrances to the cave, probably raising more eyebrows since I'm sure a cave that big was well known to locals.

Just a guess on how they could get caught.
A lot of narc people work undercover to buy the drugs themselves. They can track down the dealer's home and spy on them from far away and probably caught them going to their cave.

They should have set up a solar array! Anyone with an electric bill that high would have raised a red flag somewhere. 🙂

The solar and storage system would have been so large (depending the wattage of all that lighting) it would have attracted attention anyway.

Enough solar panels to power lights at 10% efficiency (or whatever) wouldn't raise red flags anywhere.. Nope...

It would make sense to use generators though.

At $20/gram that would be $896,000. Figure they are wholesaling it out to others... 100lbs is probably worth about $300k to them. If they're turning that every two months they're pulling just short of $2 million a year. Nice.
