i have a couple of shared folders on my computer, and i have remote desktop working. i was wondering if i could map those folders to my comp at work using the public IP given to my router and using the port used for remote desktop? or can you think of another way

UltraVNC lets you copy files as part of it's client/server.

Making a normal "Flie Share" is going to be hard, and very very unsafe. You need a VPN connection, or some sort of encrypted tunneling, such as SSH port forwarding.
