Map: where NHL players were born.

Well yeah. I believe Canada produces a bit over 50% of the NHL players, with the rest split between the US and the rest of the world.

But could Canada support a 30 team league that would generate the amount of revenue that the NHL generates? Probably not, so quit your complaining. 😉

Edit: OK, you can complain if they try to move more teams to the southern US.

I heard that wherever it's cold enough for ponds/lakes to freeze in the winter, ice hockey is the most popular sport. I don't know if its true, but it should be.

I wish they showed names too. Zero from Calgary, I don't believe it!

It says there is 6 from my town of <8k people. I don't think there are any here that are currently playing, so it must include past players.

Wikipedia says that one goaltender from here, Lorne Anderson gave up the fastest hat trick, 21 seconds lol.

That map says 70% are Canadian, although I'm really not sure how accurate it is.

Pretty sure that map shows everyone who has ever played in the NHL, because I clicked on NJ and half of the players who were listed were retired.

From 2005-2006: http://www.thephysicsofhockey.com/documents/country.pdf (PDF)
Canada: 53.6%
USA: 18.5%

The chart of number of players per million population is interesting, and not surprisingly the US drops farther down the list (0.6 for the US vs 15.9 for Canada, 7.6 for Finland, etc)

The do. Click the country on the right hand side, then click the red dots, the names plus stats will pop up.

This looks to be anyone who's played in the NHL. Some of them were born in the fifties.

Nice! Thanks! Looking at my hometown and area, I recognize a lot of the last names.

The Calgary ones are showing up for me now too, don't know why they didn't before.
