Manned moon mission in 2018??

MadRat

Lifer
What would a manned mission to the moon accomplish that robotic missions would not? The robots on Mars have proven remarkably agile even during Mars winter. Surely with the moon so much more hospitable we could get even more done with robots. Its my loud opinion that a manned mission to the moon is just plain stupid.

Not to trash the thread, but without even spending the time to search for it, I bet there has to be a thread about how much more productive human space exploration is. Also, that 104bil, it's not money that's just magically coming out of some new tax bill, it's all out of NASA's budget. If you do a simple breakdown, that's 8 billion a year over the next 13 years, and a large majority of that is into the design of the new rocket which is kinda sorta absolutely needed anyway.

I suppose I could get all philosophical and romantic about space travel that 104 billion going back into the economy, employing people, and producing valuable scientific advancements isn?t exactly a waste.

I'd rather see a project to go to Mars myself, but the Moon is a good step. We really should have started a base/colony by now on the moon, I don't know why we just stopped going and never went back.

Why even bother sending robot's to the moon at this point?? I'd rather see NASA spend the money on the space station and getting their "car' fixed.

Recycled old crap.

Is this the best that we can do with the Governments gutting of NASA ?
in 2005 use the 40 year old technology that is left over bits and peices ?

In 9 years from now you'd think that someone could put together something fresh
instead of dusting of an antique.

I'd love to see a manned Mars mission. Hell, I'd volunteer to go thru the training and go to Mars. What an amazing journey that would be.

Going to the Moon feels like reinventing the wheel. I mean, what's the point of this? Is this part of another project?

Believe me, I'd like to get out of this solar system by the end of my lifetime (which doesn't seem likely at all), but we should've been to Mars by now with a functioning base on the Moon. It's been nearly 40 years since we first stepped foot there.

Edit: Oh and another thing. Is this country so drag-assed that it'll take 13 years with our technology and resources to do something that was accomplished in less than 9 years almost 40 years ago! By now, we should be having roundtrip flights to lunar resorts by now.

I concur we'd love to see you go! 😀

Me too! Lets get on solid footing again before wasting tons of money on going to the moon.

You have to qualify to do that stuff!

The moon is believed to be the launching and testing points for any mission to mars.

What I want to know is with our current advanced in technology, why is going to take 13 years to get to the moon again?

:lips:

Let's start a "Send Conjur Packing" fund to pay for my training!

I'd like to see some funding go into that space elevator...esp. with the latest advances in those nanotubes.

I find your lack of adventure disturbing..

we have a deficit of over $450 billion thanks to Bush and they want to send a $108billion mission to the moon? FOR WHAT? more stupid moonrocks?! It's not like they're going to construct anyhting useful there like, oh say, A SPACEPORT!
Wow, I thought it was in the Trillions! I guess we are doing pretty good if it is just in the billions.
