Mandrake or Red Hat?

Personally, I wouldn't go with either. I have experience with both, and they limit you a great deal. They may try and cater to the needs of a new user, but I'm an advocate in learning an Operating System before you let it do everything for you. Then again, that's just my opinion...

i'm also wondering which to install. I just went to CS student orientation at UC Davis and all the machines there run linux and unix and all the programming and assignments are done through that. They said that if we install it at home it'd help us greatly.

Debian is an awesome Linux distro. I'm currently switching a few of my FreeBSD workstations over to Debian (I'm still leaving my servers FreeBSD though). Apt-get is one of the best tools there is...

If you got a fast machine I'd use gentoo. Its a helluva lot more up to date with packages then Debian. Its got an awesome packaging tool also, emerge.

Both Mandrake and Redhat are excellent distros. I run and have always ran (well, since version 4.0) Redhat, however I've heard many many good things about mandrake.
