Me I'd say it would be great. Give lots of discipline to everyone and teach them a few things. Maybe recruit more and I think it would be better for society as a whole. Also less fat mofo's about but they may get fat after the military service.......

I'd say a 2year term would be good.

How nice of you to force "discipline" on them in the land of the free. I would have just left as I have no interest in wasting a significant portion of my time running around with a gun.
As though people can have no direction or skills in life without the military......

My dad was forced to serve....my uncle was forced to serve..he's still serving now..he's never home with the wife and kids...i don't even remember what he looks like, honestly b/c i just never saw him enough.

My mom and dad decided to move out of Taiwan before my brother was old enough to be forced to serve as well. That's why we're here in the US.

I voted no.

two years of serviceis a good thing. one year of of active service and one year of training in an optional field.

It would not only instill a greater respect for the countryl, but teach a lot of ppl a decent trade.

I remember that one of my brothers refused to sign up for the draft. Then three years later applied to the government for a college grant. I clapped when they turned him down for it!!

You're a mean sibling :)

But I don't think people need to join the armed forces to have a greater respect for the country. Anyways, we have such a large population that the military would just become too bloated. Also, it would set people back career-wise, especially males if females were not required to serve.

I bet any training they give isn't exactly the best either... it's no secret that military/government employees usually aren't the best.

So does Israel, but both of those countries are in situations where they are in dire need of troops because of unfriendly neighbors and they don't have a high enough population for a purely volunteer army. I essentially agree with the above statements that a volunteer, prefessional army, if it is sizeable enough (which, in the case of the US, it most definitely is), is much more effective than conscripts.

Military IT is by far up and away the greatest IT organization ever devised. They were able to keep the multiplatformed battlefield Milnet operating in the middle of the desert on only commercial hardware. So many IT firms have problems keeping routers and servers functioning in air conditioned datacenters, while the signal corps were able to keep Ciscos running out of tents with fvcked up 'AC' in the middle of a sandstorm.

Why do you think there were so many fraggings and "friendly fire" incidents in Vietnam?

No, it's a very bad idea.

It would not improve morale, it would kill morale. People that don't want to do a job usually don't do it very well.

It worked in WW2 because the country had been attacked and the majority of those drafted were commited to the cause and felt morally right even if they hadn't chosen to serve.

Manditory military service... No.
Manditory military training... Yes.

Gym class in combat fatigues and paint ball guns sounds fun.

I would carpet-bomb a large city before they forced me into military service. I could have sworn Marx and Lenin died.....

i agree. different people are suited for different things. not everyone would make a good soldier and/or benefit more from being one.

No. The US military is most effective now, when its members are volunteers with high motivation. Quality and morale would go way, way down if service were made mandatory. The draft should be reserved for times of dire need.

Edit: Oh, and REPOST :p

Mandatory military serving?

wtf?!

That was about 11months ago! I bet some guys search just so the can say repost :) :p

I agree that for the USA you'd have a very big Military then. Other countries do it and from the posts I see why. Didn't really know why but I guess their size, they can manage it.

As for Gopunks statement well I'd say the mandatory service would be from now and not in the past as we can't affect that :p :)

Given the prevailing cultural ideology in the United States, and the highly individualistic nature that it promotes I think that compulsory military service is a bad idea. You're not going to get really effective soldiers that way.

Hmmm...I see both sides to the argument but this country is built on freedom to choose what you want to do. I guess you have to make your decision from that.

until a few years ago every male turning 18 had to serve for 12-18 months in Belgium.
I was lucky because the people born in 1976 were the first that had not to go anymore.

there are some rumours that they are going to reinstate some sort of mandatory service because they don't have enough volunteers

it was a national sport over here faking a medical condition so you didn't have to go in :p

Although I see the reasons behind it, i'd have to say no. Im currently in the army reserves, and I have a feeling that the quality of soldiers would drop.
