What do you guys think?

Me I'd say it would be great. Give lots of discipline to everyone and teach them a few things. Maybe recruit more and I think it would be better for society as a whole. Also less fat mofo's about but they may get fat after the military service.......

I'd say a 2year term would be good.

While I think most people could handle it, and that it may even do some people a bit of good, making it mandatory is not a good idea. We already get enough people volunteering to join up that we don't need to force everyone to try it out.

Edit: Oh, and REPOST :p

Mandatory military serving?

And what about me not being able to make money while in the military and my life in general? What about girls, after all? There are no girls in the army. Nothing to go there for, period.

I think that despite the obvious upside, it's a bad idea. Why? Because it'd be a big babysitting service for those who don't want to be there in the first place. And what would happen if you sent those who hate it to war?

it just wouldn't work in the USA, the soldiers we have are enough, and in other countries that do this, some of which aren't so poor, the pay isn't anything, South Korean mandatory army folks get about $10 a month from what I hear, if we had tons and tons of soldiers, we wouldn't do as bad, but still the pay wouldn't be enough when military budget is spread too thin

edit: as far as girls.. I rather be in japan or korea anyway, but thats besides the point it wouldnt work

No. I couldn't stand being in the military. I will always support our troops, the men, maybe not the actions. If I were drafted, I would go and do my part. But manditory service is a horrible way to do things. What a way to revoke freedom.

make the CO's do the dishes and laundry and clean everything. the worst part of being in the military is all the cleaning (at least from my experience in the Navy), field day sucks

I thought Stalin was dead

Well it's what those people who don't have to serve say about the military, liek women etc. They think it's pretty cool to serve. But they would never go there themleves b/c it isn't a resort or anything. In fact, army is very much like prison. Kick someone's ass or become their beech. From that point it's going to be fine. Maybe.

There's actually quite a few countries that have mandatory military service.

Most of them either need it for security reason, or because they don't have enough ppl for a standing army.
I think the US is doing fine with the voluntary service program they have right now.

A volunteer military is more effective but I think it would be a big boost to morale and patriotism if everyone had to do a mandatory stint in the armed forces. Some young people would actually give a damn about the country if they actually had to do something for their country.

Mandatory service should not be required.

The draft should be used only in times of national emergency like the outbreak of a major war.

It's a very effective way to make people hate their country, not like it. You can't be forced to like something or someone. If you don't and they force you you start to hate it.

Lots of us already have discipline and aren't misfits that need to go to the military to get it. And what are they going to teach? How to mop a floor and shoot a gun?

It's probably a bad idea, but I wonder how quickly politicians and the rich elite would clamor for war if their kids could be shipped out.

i say no
some people need some discipline, but to force people into fighting wouldnt go over well in a war; at least not in a country as large as ours

If I remember right, the COs in Germany during the 80s cleaned houses for the elderly. Something like a community service type of arrangement.

Their kids would never get in there despite that it's mandatory for 'everybody'.

no. do you think people like albert einstein or alan turing would be better off and give to society more by running around with guns for 2 years or studying and innovating for 2 years?
