Some sort of societal volunteerism, yes. Military service? Hell NO!!
Let's face it, there's some real morons out there, who would be the square peg in the round hole, and waste more time/effort/resources than they would ever contribute.
I was in the Navy, back in the 80's, at the end of the time period when judges would take troublesome young men and offer them 3 years in prison, or 3 years in the military (branch of service to be determined by the offender, usually). We had a guy like that on my first ship. And while, occasionally, this sort of service would actually help a screwup to become a better person, most of the time they were just as big a screwup in the military as they'd been as a civilian, and were just marking time until the end of their enlistment (because to be released early, for being a troublemaker, would entail them satisfying the remainder of the 3 years in prison).
Believe me, we get enough types in the volunteer military that have to be taught their right from their left. We don't need a multitude of them, who I wouldn't trust with the proverbial potato gun.
