Like it or not, TV reflects cultural values and norms. There was a reason on TV they always said "Yes ma'am" and "no Ma'am" and "Yes sir" and "no sir".
Today? On TV they say "Whatever" and "sure", and funny enough its the same thing with the children.

I think that when your son/daughter plays sports the coach is the boss (within reason). I think the coach did the right thing, and I think it's sad and pathetic that people are getting their panties in a bunch over it.
