I have never been reprimanded through physical force, yet I am very repsectful to everyone, have great self-discipline, and not the least bit problematic.

I have 2 daughtersand never have I once had to smack their ass. If they deserved it, I wouldn't hesitate though. People can blame it on the kids all they want, but your child is going to be a little piss ant if he was raised that way. Kids learn directly from their parents. If your kid is a terror, you must be lacking the discipline. My wife and I are both lucky that our kids respect us enough that they don't want to get out of line. They know that if and when they do, a paddle is waiting though

Like it or not, TV reflects cultural values and norms. There was a reason on TV they always said "Yes ma'am" and "no Ma'am" and "Yes sir" and "no sir".
Today? On TV they say "Whatever" and "sure", and funny enough its the same thing with the children.

Yep. That's been my stance from the start.

I actually condone spankings and other sorts of corporal, non-abusive punishment. But if it's not done by the parents, or without the parents' consent, you need to back up before you strike a child in any way.

Both my parents are teachers. My mother teaches students from 1st-5th grade, and my dad is responsible for grades 9-12. I help both of them out ocasionally.

A weak teacher is one who can't find any way to control their kids besides yelling at them (Or hitting them, before my generation) I'm proud to say that my parents have great control over the kids they are responsible for.

I totally agree with you, but that's life I guess. I would never DREAM of laying a hand on someone else's children unless it was to prevent immediate harm to themselves or someone else. As grotesque as a child's behavior might be, it's not my job to parent them. Striking someone else's child is akin to throwing yourself in front of a bus.

Just because the parent is failing doesn't mean you're free to step in. There are some thing in life that just have to be chalked up to "WTF... oh well...".
