I disagree.

you want a bunch of brats running around or a disciplined posterity?

You lay a hand on my kid, you better be ready to defend yourself.

It's the parents' place to decide who physically disciplines a kid, and if it occurs at all.

Keep your little innocent snort nosed spoiled brat well disciplined and maybe others wouldnt have to do what you dont want to.

Not directly at YOU, but as a general statement. I feel the same way, but my kids have also had that ass worked over a time or two as well. I dont have to worry about having another parent disciplining my children because they are well behaved. Reason is, they know what happens when they arent.

I hear ya.

Nope. But I know that violence doesn't work on most kids in the long run, and sometimes it can have a negative effect.

And here we see yet another reason why our children are growing up more and more unruly and problematic.

I have never been reprimanded through physical force, yet I am very repsectful to everyone, have great self-discipline, and not the least bit problematic.

Are you going to be one of those parents who manslaughters the coach because he smacked your kid for cussing on live national TV?

No, but I would knock your ass the fvck out.

You don't hit another persons' kid. It's that simple. Doesn't matter how much they deserve it.

You just nailed it on the head.

I have 2 daughtersand never have I once had to smack their ass. If they deserved it, I wouldn't hesitate though. People can blame it on the kids all they want, but your child is going to be a little piss ant if he was raised that way. Kids learn directly from their parents. If your kid is a terror, you must be lacking the discipline. My wife and I are both lucky that our kids respect us enough that they don't want to get out of line. They know that if and when they do, a paddle is waiting though :)

That's because the article in the OP sucks. It provides no context on to the how, why, or where in regards to the coach "striking" the player. Thus, posters are letting their imaginations run wild.

And obviously you have never talked to a teacher.
You should probably wear the shoes, before you tell someone what they should be wearing.

Better yet, go volunteer at a school sometime. Say 3rd or 4th grade and up.

While I largely agree with JS80's comments, I have to agree on this, too. If you think my kid is unruly, bring your beef to me. Lay a hand on my kid, and I'll send your ass to the hospital and mine to jail. I'll deal with the consequences later.

The same could be said for every generation.

Previous generations to ours have as a whole been more respectful of their peers and elders.
Exceptions to the rules of course, I'm simply speaking as a whole. Remember watching those old TV shows?
Like it or not, TV reflects cultural values and norms. There was a reason on TV they always said "Yes ma'am" and "no Ma'am" and "Yes sir" and "no sir".
Today? On TV they say "Whatever" and "sure", and funny enough its the same thing with the children.

Yep. That's been my stance from the start.

I actually condone spankings and other sorts of corporal, non-abusive punishment. But if it's not done by the parents, or without the parents' consent, you need to back up before you strike a child in any way.

Both my parents are teachers. My mother teaches students from 1st-5th grade, and my dad is responsible for grades 9-12. I help both of them out ocasionally.

A weak teacher is one who can't find any way to control their kids besides yelling at them (Or hitting them, before my generation) I'm proud to say that my parents have great control over the kids they are responsible for.

I totally agree with you, but that's life I guess. I would never DREAM of laying a hand on someone else's children unless it was to prevent immediate harm to themselves or someone else. As grotesque as a child's behavior might be, it's not my job to parent them. Striking someone else's child is akin to throwing yourself in front of a bus.

Just because the parent is failing doesn't mean you're free to step in. There are some thing in life that just have to be chalked up to "WTF... oh well...".
