Justified self-defense is governed by the principles of imminence, necessity, and proportionality. This basically means that the threat MUST be imminent (i.e. RIGHT there), necessary (you cannot pursue avenues of nonconfrontation such as escaping the situation safely or without major injury to your person), and it must be proportional (you cannpot shoot someone coming at you with their fists dead if shooting them in their leg would have sufficed).

Now self-defense is a VERY tricky issue legally so usually the belief that your life is in danger is considered enough justification to use deadly force. Of course, anybody can assert that but if the evidence goes against you you can justifiably be charged with manslaughter.
