Damn I wish I can remember exactly what I had 6 years ago. I am always going through systems so I'm not sure what I had. Much of what has been mentioned here I have had at one point in the past.

What's funny is I did have an Opteron 165 system overclocked to 3.1Ghz with 4GB of ram. I put an ati 4850 video card later in that system and gave it to my aunt and uncle as an Xmas gift 3 years ago. It can STILL play video games decently and runs well. Of course they aren't playing BF3, but they do play other games that interest them from time to time such as Kings Bounty. So unless it is the latest, greatest, most graphics stressing game, their system will handle it. I'm serious.

While hardware has certainly advanced since that system, it really hasn't been needed for the average person to be any faster than that system I gave my uncle. Even so I am a geek and love getting the latest and greatest when I can afford to do so.

I had a pretty good gaming machine for someone with as little income as I had. Some socket 754 processor... Athlon64 3000+ or something like that? Also had an X850xt which was the best AGP card I could get at the time. I think I maxed at 2 gigs of memory. I held on to that for a while and never upgraded because I didn't want to change to pci-e yet. That would require all new mobo, processor, ram, etc. So I held on to that for a while until I gave up, bought a 360 in college and remained blissfully ignorant of what I was missing.

Up until last year when I graduated, got a job, and could finally throw together a decent gaming machine again with a 2500k and GTX570

i think that might be around when i got the amd 64 3500+ box. i think i had a 9800 pro in it. maybe 2 gb of ram? that sounds about right.

on the flip side, between me and the wife we have 10 cores between us now!

2006?

I was running an AMD Opteron 170 system with 2GB of RAM and a GeForce 7900GT.

My current machine, built in 2009, is a Core2Quad with 4GB of RAM and a Radeon 4850.

If I upgrage this year, it will most likely be something like a Core i5 with 8GB of RAM, a mid-level videocard, and a 128GB or better SSD.

In 2006 I paid $700 for a 8800 GTX Ultra which is now collecting dust in my closet. Ah well, it's still less of a loss than my house which I also bought in 2006! 😀 ... ... 🙁

6 years ago I think I was running my Athlon 64 3000+ on socket 754...

At that time I think I had a Radeon X1800xt or maybe was still using a Geforce 4 Ti4200.

Was using dual 19inch CRTs, and gaming at 1600x1200 ...

Now I've got three 21 inch LCDs running 1920x1080, set up with Eyefinity and a pair of 6870s, with a 600gb raptor boot drive and an i5 CPU... I was tempted to go with SSD, but don't want to be an early adopter... as that $$$ was better spent on a second video card instead 🙂
