TORONTO — Toronto police are looking for a thief with expensive tastes.

They say a man went into the Queens Quay LCBO earlier this month and went to the vintage section, where he selected a rare bottle of 50-year-old Glenfiddich Single Malt scotch.

The 700-millilitre bottle, which was in a glass case, is worth $26,000. Only 50 bottles were made worldwide.

Police say the man then selected a bottle of wine and paid for that, but left the store without paying for the scotch.

The man is described as white, 35-45, 5’10″, clean-shaven with black-framed glasses. He was last seen wearing a Burberry plaid shirt, brown hat, brown trenchcoat and black jeans.

Saw this on the news. I thought those bottles were in glass cases under lock and key.

I go to Fry's to buy a processor, they take it up front and don't give it to me until I pay for it.

Maybe they should consider a similar strategy for something that costs more than most people's cars.

Yeah, slightly different demographic... just slightly. This isn't exactly a common occurrence. Geeks attempting to rip of Fry's probably is.

Good for him! If you're going to steal booze at least have the sense to steal expensive booze. Got to be a hard product to fence though, not a whole lot of market for scotch in that price range.

Have you been in a BestBuy/Fry's/CompUSA lately?

Also, places which sell $26,000.00 bottles of alcohol are not your corner get drunk fast liquor store with bars on the window and a shotgun behind the counter. Jocleefus isn't coming in these stores.

lol ouch I can't imagine wanting to pay that much for a bottle of any consumable product. Imagine the permanent items you could buy with that instead.

Guy probably drinked it and got drunk and will eventually sober up and realize he now has a 26k+ fine to pay.

The 50-year-old Glenfiddich single malt Scotch comes in a bottle of hand blown glass. Its sterling silver collar is engraved with a picture of Queen Elizabeth II wearing an oversized crown.
It has a wax stamp bearing the number 183. It is part of a batch of 450 bottles released in groups of 50 between 2009 and 2017. The 2012 release commemorates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Glenfiddich Scotch Single Malt 15 Year Old 750ML - $60.49/bottle.

If that's the best picture they have of him then good luck.

On the one hand it's not going to be easy to fence, but on the other hand it's not going to depreciate in value while the case gets cold.

I work just down the street from this store and I've been there myself. It's right in downtown Toronto and all liquor is sold through the government stores. Any average Joe can go here. They have $26k bottles of scotch in one section and the 9% barf Labatt Wildcat beer in another section.

Definitely a more expensive bottle of booze...but his bar tab still isn't quite as high as this guy:

GREENSBURG, PA -- Fifty-two bottles of well-aged whiskey disappeared between his lips, police said, and now it's time for a western Pennsylvania man to settle up.

John Saunders, the former live-in caretaker of a Pittsburgh-area mansion, faces criminal charges for allegedly drinking more than $100,000 worth of the owner's whiskey.

Owner Patricia Hill found nine cases of whiskey hidden in the walls and stairwell of the century-old Georgian mansion built by coal and coke industrialist J.P. Brennan after she bought it in 2012. The Old Farm Pure Rye Whiskey was produced in the early 1900s by the nearby West Overton Distilling Co.

"My guess is that Mr. Brennan ordered 10 cases . pre-Prohibition," said Hill, a New Yorker who bought the house to convert it into a bed-and-breakfast. "I was told by his family that family members used to greet him at the door each day with a shot of whiskey."

Scottdale police told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Saunders drank dozens of bottles whiskey valued at $102,400 by a New York auction house.

Saunders, 62, of Irwin, was charged with receiving stolen property and theft. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Hill told police Chief Barry Pritts she stored the whiskey in the original cases, which contained 12 bottles each. After Saunders moved out, Hill said she discovered last March that the bottles in four cases were empty.

Saunders initially denied drinking the whiskey when questioned by police, but Pritts said a DNA linked him to three of the empty bottles.

A phone listing for Saunders could not immediately be located Friday.

They just leave a 26k bottle of scotch out in the open for anyone to grab? Doesn't seem like a very uh... prudent thing to do.
