Somebody's been watching too much horror movies.

Oliver said a truck driver then arrived at the scene and handed out wrenches and crowbars to several men. The small group gathered around the door to the bus and prevented the man from exiting until police arrived.

Thehehhe.

My gun's on belt, not in my luggage. Carrying an inaccessible firearm is pointless. I never ride DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) trains or buses without a sidearm. Of course, I never go anywhere without my sidearm. :)

Damn, that's cowardly.

Yes, defending someone's life while risking your own in doing so is such a cowardly act.

No; being afraid to leave your house without a gun is.

I missed the part where he said that in his post.

Because having a living psychopath armed with a knife is even safer?

I would hope that someone owning a firearm for personal protection would at least undergo some basic level of training on properly using it. And if everyone was able to get off the bus in time, they'd have been able to get out of the way of a gun before it was discharged at the attacker.

And the moral of the story:

Do not sleep on busses.

Shit I'm not sleeping on my metro ride anymore

Yeah that's just freaky.

I wouldn't sleep on a thing like that. At least if you were awake you have a chance at fighting the guy off and although might get sliced up pretty good you would have a better shot at surviving the attack.

I live in a very dangerous place. I think it's so dangerous because everyone carries guns.

Last time I was on the bus, I had an empty seat beside me. The time before that, a really annoying teenager talking to his friends the entire way across the aisle. I'll make sure to put my feet up the next time and no more sleeping.

So for all the people that are trying to say that a gun would have saved a life, I'd say you're quite wrong. The man had already been stabbed multiple times before anyone even knew what was going on. The man was likely already dead within a few minutes and no gun would have saved him. And then there's the thought you're missing, what if the psycho had a gun? Then you'd likely have at least 5 people dead before anyone stopped him. Guns are not some miracle device that save the world.

I would take gun vs knife over fists vs knife any day of the week

My point is that a gun wouldn't have changed anything. The man would have been stabbed to death still. Bringing a gun into the situation would have at best done one of two things. Either first the murderer himself would have gotten murdered. Or second other innocent bystanders would have gotten shot. Neither of these impoves the situation. So why tout that a gun would have saved the day, when indeed it would not have done so.

Wow. Unbelievable. I'm speechless, and I thought it was impossible to see something crazier at this point.

The first way would have saved the canadian gov't millions in prosecution and a lifetime of incarceration. That would be the best possible outcome, IMO, given that the victim was dead either way.

Jesus christ did anyone read the bottom of the page? Are they trying to be funny?

The minister said he's not entertaining any notion of registering knives as dangerous weapons given that millions of kitchen knives alone are sold annually.

It's implied. Why else would he carry it around with him, 24/7, if he wasn't afraid?

Why do you keep a fire extinguisher in your house 24/7? Are you afraid?

Always be prepared. Or be dead. It's pretty much up to you.

Do I get a discount on my life insurance premium if I carry a gun?

Be prepared for what??? The 'inevitable' mugging and beating that's going to happen to us all?

I'm 33, have never carried a gun in my life. I'm not dead.

I'm also not judging anyone on carrying a gun. Please, do what makes you feel safe. But to say something as stupid as 'Always be prepared. Or be dead.' for carrying a gun around is beyond ridiculous.

Thank you. Unfortunately the victim was a goner right off the bat. The passengers all got out safely, they contained the attacker safely and the police apprehended him safely. This was the best possible outcome of the situation. Nothing could have saved the victim, even if the bus was stopped right outside a hospital with a police station across the street and everyone on the bus was carrying a gun.

When I was in the youth hostel in Montreal there was a large group who decided that it was safe to hitchhike in Canada, but not in the USA. They were saying that Americans are too violent.

Well that blows their theory to hell. Along with the Holmolka slayings in the mid-90s, the US sounds safer all the time.

Holmolka - Barbie and Ken murders

This did take place on a bus so maybe hitchiking is OK.

I don't often say this, but owned. Perfect analogy.
