Well, obviously, no one ever taught this young feller that gasoline is flammable! It's obviously not his fault then, right?

I remember when I was a kid, you never saw warning labels on anything, and pretty much nothing was kid proofed (I think the only thing you could buy to protect babies were those folding gates, and the little plastic things to stick in the wall outlets, which a lot of people didn't bother with).

Did people do stupid things and get hurt? Yep! Did some of them die from their stupidity? You betcha!! But all in all, the world was a good place, and somewhat improved from those people removing themselves from the gene pool. My father smoked, and used a zippo lighter to light his cigs. Does anyone think that zippo (then, or even nowadays) had a child restraint on it, to keep me from picking it up and starting a fire with it? Nope!! The only restraint I had was my father telling me that if I touched his zippo without permission, I could expect a good a$$whooping!! :Q

And that's part of the problem. All of a sudden parents couldn't spank their kids, or even threaten to do so. You spank your kids? Dang, you must be a child beater, and we'll take your kids away from you!! And yet, part of the method for teaching a child not to do something that you know is wrong, or dangerous, is to give them a negative reinforcement of your will, your rules, whatever you want to call it. Even after I graduated high school, and left my parent's house, I wouldn't have dreamed of touching my Dad's stuff, especially his zippo, without his permission. Why? Respect, fear, whatever. But I not only learned how to be a good person, but how to be a smart person, and not do stupid things like smoke while gassing anything up.

I agree. Maybe it's time we take all the warnings off of everything, tell the lawyers to fvck off, and let all these morons kill themselves. Hopefully they won't take too many smart people with them when they go, but a small amount might be acceptable, especially if they're the ones wanting to protect these idiots from themselves. Maybe then we won't hear this famous line too often anymore:

"Hey, y'all, check out what I can do!!"

I doubt the cigarette caused the fire, was probably static electricty or a cell phone ringing. haven't you guys seen the Mythbusters where they could not light gasoline on fire with a cigarette? They couldn't do it, but said it was plausible. This is an excerpt:

The Myth: Can a cigarette light a pool of gas on fire?

The Experts: Adam and Jamie

Memorable/Quotable Moments:
Jamie puffing on the cigarette so that Adam can measure the temperature of it!

Action/Results: The end of a lit cigarette is between 450-500 degrees F. Gasoline ignites between 500-540 degrees F., according to Rob Lee. But, even though they drop, put, and even roll the cigarette in the gasoline, they can't get the gas to ignite.
Myth PLAUSIBLE, but not doable.

So more than likely he is not in college, works a job with no benefits, is too stupid to worry about getting any insurance for himself (gotta pay for them smokes man), therefore it falls back on the taxpayers in this country to pay his medical bills through medicare and medicaid. and if his state has something similar, then the taxpayers in his state will foot part of the bill as well.
That's quite a string of assumptions you go through.

What do you want to do about this? I mean there are a LOT of stupid people and you pay for their stupidity ALL the time.

I believe that gasoline vapors are far easier to ignite than liquid gasoline. I don't know what conditions would create vapors (I'm guessing hot ambient temperatures and relatively calm air could cause vapors to collect hear the gas filler opening) but I have no problem believing the cigarette probably caused the explosion. (Gas vapors explode. Liquid gasoline burns but doesn't go boom.)

Folks you're forgetting the obvious, to light a cigarette you generally use an open flame. He's dumb enough to smoke while filling up, maybe he lit up there too.
