Man smoking at filling station catches fire

The Arizona Republic
Sept. 13, 2005 02:00 PM

A 26-year-old man suffered burns on 75 percent of his body when he attempted to gas up his pickup truck while smoking a cigarette Monday evening, authorities said.

Thomas Warren was smoking when he tried to pump gas into his 1976 Ford truck at a station in the 21600 block of North 30th Avenue, near Deer Valley Road, and became engulfed in flames, according to Phoenix police.

He was taken to a Valley hospital; his condition was not immediately known.

Notice the URL has "man on fire" in it.

And sadly, you tax dollars will probably pay for this man's injuries, and then for his cancer treatment a few years down the road.

People who are injured through their own stupidity should not be able to sponge off of the taxpayers. I.E No helmet when riding motor cycles, smoking when pumping gas, drinking and driving, etc.

Yes! I hope we come to that conclusion as a country some day.... Morons who disregard their own health/safety through sheer stupidity deserve no sympathy, and thus, no support.

I bet the gas station will get sued, even though they do have warning signs.

Who ever has the deepest pockets will wind up paying the big bucks, while some of the others will have to contribute something, or at least pay big legal bills to defend themselves, which in turn drives up gas prices, again, we will be paying for this idiots stupidity.

Hell if the fire marshall wanted to, he could cite the guy for breaking the law, as well as endangering others around the gas station. If a child was there, he could be charged with child endangerment, reckless endangerment, etc. Charge him with negligence, property destruction, arson, hell I am sure a creative fire marshall and District Attorney can bring enough charges against this idiot to keep him paying for lawyers for a while.

Why should I have to pay for this persons injuries and illnesses that happend through no fault of mine? I did not make him smoke, which is probably going to cause him cancer or heart disease. I did not make him smoke, which caused the gasoline to ignite and burn him.
I do not make the person on the motorcycle ride without a helmet, and then wraps his bike around a telephone pole and spends the rest of his life as a drooling twit being fed baby food through a tube.

Why should my tax dollars go to pay for idiots like these. When that money could be spent on those who, through no fault of their own, become sick or injured. Like the cancer patients down in the childrens hospital. Those kids did nothing to get sick. Or perhaps the teenager who is riding his bike home from school and gets hit by a driver who swerves off the road. Or maybe the guy who is out with his wife at dinner and is walking to the car and is shot during a mugging. These people did nothing stupid, but becuase of idiots like the guy at the gas station, fewer dollars are able to go around to those who did not do anything stupid.
