Man shoots off finger, hits mother

I'm willing to bet he went out of order. He racked (ejected round), drop the mag, then pulled the trigger (which fired the round in the chamber). The problem is, when he ejected the round, he loaded another round from the mag. The order HAS to be, drop mag, rack (ejecting the round), VERIFY it's clear, THEN pull the trigger to break down weapon.

The order is extremely critical. Not following the proper procedure can result in an accidental discharge, as what most likely happened here.

Call me a noob, but wouldn't you separate the magazine from the gun when you're not using it to kill?

The article said that the incident happened after he finished cleaning the gun. Although, I suppose it's possible that he "cleaned" it by only wiping down the outside... 😕

Either way, it was careless and reckless handling. He's lucky all he lost was a finger, and not something more crucial / life-threatening, or his mother.

Yes, or he could just be retarded. 😛

I'm guessing this took place in the kitchen? If not, then why was the mother out of it? She wouldn't have gotten hit by the finger.

It flew out of the patio, around the house, through the kitchen window and hit the mom in the forehead for procreating. So says the magic finger theory.

The only sure-fire way to tell if a gun is loaded is to look down the barrel and pull the trigger, if you can see the firing pin, the gun is unloaded.

There are more people buying guns now than ever before, and the number of gun owners are rising every day, which just means more idiots are owning guns as well. I see this trend as a divinely ironic way of nature taking out the idiots of society. It's just shitty that sometimes these idiots end up hurting the innocents as well 🙁

Actually, there was an aftermath to that (video can be found on topgear.com)

He claims this to be the correct procedure for checking for debris (ice, in the arctic) that could have formed in the muzzle/barrel of a pump action shotgun, where you can not just open it up an look through the breach, to check for obstructions.
Of course, before looking down that end of the barrel, you would make sure that no round remains in the device.

Quite a few guns these days have a mag safety too. Wonder what gun he used to see if he could even do that or not.

Edit: whoops, didn't see the last line. Taurus 380 I guess
