A man shot off his own finger while cleaning his gun Sunday evening.

Steven Johnson, 22, said when he finished cleaning the gun at home when he inserted the magazine into the gun and racked the slide.

He said he did not realize the gun was loaded and pulled the trigger to see if the weapon was working.

"The tip of his finger flew off and hit his mother," according to a police report.

Johnson's mother drove him to the hospital, where police were summoned. The report said Johnson's story checked out.

The report did not indicate if doctors were able to reattach the tip of Johnson's left index finger.

The gun, the report said, was a Tarus .380.

Uh, Johnson is a dumbass.

How can you not know it was loaded when you explicitly loaded it?! I could make some allowances for someone finding a rusted up piece of junk, and it turned out to be loaded, but this is inexplicable.

Millions of gun owners routinely clean their guns without any "accident" like this ever happening, but some apparently need a stubby index finger to remind them to be careful.

At least he didn't shoot his eye out.

They should make the proper method of dry-firing a firearm be to point it at your crotch before pulling the trigger.

That should prompt people to be a lot more careful about dry firing.

If not, natural selection should take care of the problem after a couple dozen generations.

1. If there was a round in the chamber when he racked it, it would have been ejected.

2. When you rack the slide on a semiauto pistol (any pistol I've ever fired anyway) the slide locks back if the mag is empty. That's how you reload while firing without having to rerack.

3. If the slide closed upon inserting a mag and racking, that means there was something in the mag.

4. How do you not notice there's a round in the mag when you insert it?

5. This person is too stupid to live, it's too bad they only lost a finger.

So the mag had at least one round in it when he slapped it in there and racked the slide (and then pulled the trigger)? Fucking moron. At least no one else was hurt.

Tell your children not to <BOOM>

Jesus Fucking Christ... didn't you hear my fucking words when I told you not to fire a loaded gun with your finger in front of it?

That's why we need finger control. He didn't have it but fortunately the gun helped him out by removing one.

I guess I missed the class where they showed you to dry fire with one finger over the front of the barrel.

The only sure-fire way to tell if a gun is loaded is to look down the barrel and pull the trigger, if you can see the firing pin, the gun is unloaded.

I'm guessing this took place in the kitchen? If not, then why was the mother out of it? She wouldn't have gotten hit by the finger.

I take it that this was a firearm that doesn't allow the trigger to function without a magazine in?

Only goes to show that you can't really make things safer when they're in the hands of an idiot.
