growing up in a chinese family, i've never heard of this concept. my family doesn't do it and neither do any of the families that i heard stories about (and there were lots of those). but recently at college i know other asian people who have "familial obligations" to basically give their family a percentage of their paycheck. if i saw my parents working their ass off at some crap job i wouldn't have a problem helping them out. growing up there was great pressure to get good grades but they've eased off a tiny little bit now that school is actually challenging. they want the best for me and still emphasize how school is really important, not that i don't know that already.
