BTW, I still take in high energy foods and sugars. But I do so when I need the energy, such as pre/post-workout and pre-sports. There IS a time and place for high energy, processed carbs. It's just a shame that those are what our body crave even when we're not active.

I'm understanding more where your coming from.

But also keep in mind that the processed carbs were not eaten as much in say the 50s. There were no 36+ oz drinks or large fries. European fast food is like it was back then.

And just so you know the reason why you crave the high energy carbs is because you eat them. It's not an innate craving, it's an addiction. What happens over time with those bursts of energy is your body makes more insulin. Insulin is what binds to glucose to deliver it to your cells. Anyway, so your body makes more of this in response to all the glucose so it can use it. Despite your body's efforts, this doesn't do any good because your cells and muscles stock up immediately and the glucose is converted into fat. This can even lead to insulin resistance which increases fat production even more. After all that glucose is converted to fat and your cells use their existing carbs, you crave more.

I used to crave those foods too. About 8 months ago I started eating like I am no. I no longer crave soda, candy, ice cream or anything like that.

The only exception is pizza. I still like that, but I know that I feel like sh1t after eating it so I don't. Everyone should do this. Unless you're eating turkey or milk, you shouldnt' feel tired after eating. That means the foods you ate suck.

"Carbohydrate addiction" is a myth, IMO. Your body craves high energy foods because it's genetically evoleved to do so.

At any rate, the only correlation with the obesity epidemic is activity levels and lifestyle changes. Foods have changed very little, if at all.

You can believe whatever you want, but it's no myth, it's science. These aren't carbohydrates. They're abominations created by man from carbohydrates.

We did not genetically evolve to want foods that didn't exist until the past 100 years.

Foods have changed significantly. Maybe it hasn't changed much since the 70s, but that's when the obesity began to rise. In the 50s, the portions were much smaller. Before this century, highly processed foods did not exist in any large form.

When Deuel arrived at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., he welcomed the spotlight, determined to prove he was no Guinness Book footnote but a man with a message: Obese people suffer because the health care system and insurance companies don?t do enough to help them.

😕

Deuel was a fast-food junkie hooked on pizza, chips, beef jerky and chili dogs. He also gobbled down cherry blintzes and ambrosia (a creamy fruit, marshmallow and coconut concoction). Even now, his face brightens when he mentions his favorite foods.

He exercises with bar bells and weights, but still smokes (he?s cut down to a pack a day)

Okay so back to that comment about the healthcare system...

the reason people are fatter today is a COMBINATION of things. both eating large portions of unhealthy foods and a sedentary lifestyle. You can argue about which one contributes more till your face turns blue but its a waste of time and will get you nowhere.

slu M.D.

Yes, I agree that it's both.

I just think that the food aspect is more important. If you cut off the source of body fat, there's no fat to begin with. And achieving this through whole foods also has several health benefits versus the eat unhealthy and be active strat.

However, doing cardio is important for health as well.

I have said that I get 0 cardio but that's because I'm doing weight training now and I don't want to stunt gains. The way I eat now also allows me to make gains in muscle without gaining fat.

And I do think that we'll never convince each other either way. So I'll just leave it at that.

The real question is, how can some people deny the genetic propensity some have for obesity?

Does anyone here think the average 130 lb teenager could EVER get this big?

Unfortunatly, some of the more ignorant among us do.

About twice a month, Deuel indulges in foods most dieters would consider off-limits: a small piece of chocolate, an ice cream bar, Taco John?s nachos on his van ride home from visiting his doctor in South Dakota.<<<

Sounds "genetic" to me. ***sarcasm off***

You sure do like to call people ignorant alot. Can't defend yourself better than that? You want to defend some fatarse who admits he eats like a sow and has no will power, then be my guest. Do not however try to tell me it is genetic. That is the biggest bunch of bull sh&^ I have ever heard. When you sit your fatass in your house all day with no exercise and you shove food down your throat, you are going to get fat. The fatter you get the more you eat, the more you eat the fatter you get. Never-ending cycle. Don't confuse no willpower with genetics. You get gray hair because of genetics. You go bald because of genetics. You are tall or short because of genetics. You get fat because you are a lazy arse who shoves food down their throat because it is easier than dealing with life. I know people who get depressed and they go eat. I know a guy who was your 130 lb teenager, who was the star of the basketball team and could dunk a ball who after highschool started eating and not exercising. He ballooned up to 480 lbs before he decided he needed to change his habits. He got down to 145 before he said it was too hard to keep up with so he is today back at 350. His mom and dad and grandparents are all rails, so where is the "genetic" part of your theory? I will admit that some people have problems with weight control, but proper diet and exercise will keep your weight down.

Read this and tell me it is genetics:

>>>he spent most of his time in bed, or sharing massive meals, Michael liked to start the day with four bowls of cereal, toast, waffles, cake, and a quart of soda, and end it with a whole pizza with the works for a bedtime snack. Mother and son tried every new diet that came along, "but after a few days, we'd reward ourselves with a chocolate cake. Then we'd call for a pizza and that would be it." <<<

Genetics, or a lazy fatarse???

Not good enough? How about this fatarse:

>>>"I had a dozen eggs, a loaf of fried bread and syrup for breakfast - then I really started eating."<<<

Maybe this one:

>>>"normally eats five meals a day, which include two 32-ounce steaks, a half-gallon of ice cream, a container of cake frosting, a large pepperoni pizza, plus gobs of mashed potatoes, tacos, pork and beans, and eight packages of peanut butter cups."<<<

Please explain to me how genetics plays a part in any of these people's weight problem. I say it is from the inability to keep their mouths shut. People eat like pigs and then they want you to feel sorry for them. At least they have you on their side. The portions that we as Americans cosume is outrageous. Go to any other country and you don't see that.

Yeah, Amused, normally I agree with you, but not in this case. This dude is obviously a lazy bastard wherein genetics probably factor a small bit.

:sigh;

Again, no 130lb geek could EVER, no matter how hard he tried, get that fat.

Genetics not only allow him to get that obese, but also fuel his abnormal appetite. Most people couldn't eat that much if you gave them all the money in the world. their bodies would reject it violently. There is OBVIOUSLY something genetically abnormal with the super obese. If there wasn't, ALL people with no self control would be super obese... they obviously are not.

EVERY single medical source agrees with me. The ABILITY to become obese and the PROPENSITY for obesity is JUST as genetic as the ability for one to eat whatever, whenever and never gain a pound.

It is the height of ignornace to say that obesity is merely a case of self control, and that all skinny people have self control, and fat people do not. It just is NOT that simple. In fact, most skinny people do NOTHING to control what and how much they eat. They are naturally skinny because of genetics.

Folks, ther is a difference between the standard fat person, the obese, and the SUPER obese like this guy. Yes, the others are mainly cases of self control, but in the case of the SUPER obese, it goes beyond that.

I just gave you an example of just that. Although the person I am talking about did not get up to 1000 lbs, he was well on his weigh (sorry couldn't resist). How about we just agree to disagree and call it a night? I don't feel like arguing and I don't think either one of us is going to change the other ones minds.

I just love some of the subtle humor MSNBC writers like to throw in.

A photo taken last June shows a pneumatic-like figure sprawled helplessly on his stomach looking like an inflated balloon.

... he still looks like a plus-sized Buddha...

He pumps a fleshy arm in triumph. He hasn?t been south of 500 in two decades.

More power to this guy, he seems to be a nice fellow, and he's doing something about his problem.

I agree, hopefully he will be able to lose the rest of it.
