Man Kills Bear With Frying Pan

I'll give this story less than a 1% chance of being real. There's no friggin way a frying pan is going to stop an 800 pound bear in its tracks "stunning him", not for a second.

That'd be like stunning an NFL linebacker with a flyswatter. Not gonna happen.

For the "shoot it in its head" crowd, it better be a good shot, or a powerful rifle, because there's a pretty good chance that the bullet will just ricochet off its skull, depending on the angle it hits it at. I've seen a case where a 12 gauge slug ricocheted off the head of a deer. IIRC in life-threatening situations involving charging bears, they recommend dropping to one knee and shooting for the vitals, not the head. (depending on the caliber involved though) But, if I can shoot a bear with a shotgun loaded with a slug, and have the slug ricochet off its skull, yet someone's going to claim to have "stunned" it with a frying pan?! Yeah, right.

Yeah, I think it is cool that he "defended" himself and all, but why not just get out of the house, then call the authorities? Ahh hell, they probably would have killed it too. Pretty amazing he took it out with a pan though, eh?

If I was that guy I wouldn't care what any animal activists said because "I killed a Fscking Kodiak Bear with a Frying Pan!!!"

But then grizzly >> black bear

And Roger ... edit your damn post :/

Did they stone it cause it posed a threat to them? Or just to do it?

and yeah..wow..I am dumb. Should have realized this story is fake.

I would not have thrown kitchen items at it. I would just carefully edege down my hall to a high power semi-auto rifle. Hopefully 20 rounds of .308 would be enough.

Didn't feel like reading the entire thread but I am pretty sure this is complete BS. Check out the comment section on Fark.com for this article.

Well my first thought would be to phone for help and try to get out of the house. My 2nd thought if that didn't work would be to get the gun. The last thing I would think would be trying to kill the bear with a pan 🙂

I don't think the guy did anything wrong. It's a shame that the bear had to die, but the guy did what he needed to do to protect himself.

That poor bear just wanted some salmon... I don't think I would have continued beating it if I had managed to daze it and knock it down, but then again, I've never been attacked by a bear.

There is no way you can kill a Kodiak with a frying pan. Their skulls can withstand a shot at point blank range. Not to mention they don't just sit there letting you smack them in the head. I don't think there's any animal that could take a Kodiak one on one without a distance weapon.

did no one notice this part "The animal, estimated at six feet tall on all fours and over eight hundred pounds"

i mean i dont know that much about bears, but for some reason I cant imagine that a bear that is as tall as i am on all fours could even make it through a doorway

The bear caused about $400 dollars in damage to the house.

The bear was simply following his natural instincts,
and had this Ryan criminal left it alone, no harm would have
been done.

No harm, what about the $400 dollars in damage?!?!?!?
Hey that bear engaged in B&E and if I'm not mistaken you can legally kill someone breaking into your home for protection.

well, you would be mistaken then...

in any case, risking life for salmon = stupid

Theres a good chance there bear wouldnt have stopped with the salmon.

IIRC, the bear was hanging around the camp, and they through rocks at it to try and get it to leave. Apparently, the boy scout pack mentality took over and what started as a few rocks tossed to scare it away turned into a full blown stoning. It was a smallish bear, probably a yearling, and the fact that it didn't take off immediately likely means that it was well on the way to becoming a "nuisance bear" that would have been destroyed eventually anyway. Doesn't excuse the group that did it though.

How was he supposed to know that, nor is that statement a guarantee that no harm would come to him.

I'm sorry for the bear, but it was self defense. The bear was not going to waltz in and politely ask for a plate of salmon and a cup of tea.

I'm picturing the Labatt Blue bear attacking this guy. Good thing it wasn't the masturbating bear from Conan O'brien show. The guy would never had seen it coming. 😀

and how would you know? oh yeah, you wouldn't, coz the fukker is already dead.
again, there's a even better chance of survival if you don't instigate the bear by throwing sh1t at it.

I read that as six feet tall when standing up.

Yeah, hoax.

Don't know if you guys noticed this, but look at the source. PRWeb is a FREE press release service that does zero fact checking.
Here is another PRWeb "press release".
If that is the only source, the story is almost certainly not true.

Lol ... yea, probably a hoax. I have a hrad time believing that an 800lb bear got owned by a frying pan.
A cast iron frying pan though. I pictured the kid hitting the bear with the edge, which would probably do enough to stun it for a second. But it does seem unlikely that the bear wouldn't have taken the kid's face off with a good paw swipe before he ever got the chance to Earthbound his way out of it.

They've found grizzlies with .44 magnum slugs embedded in their skulls, that had apparently been there for years. I doubt a frying pan would phase it.

Bears would probably love it. When we were driving down to Anchorage a few years ago, we stopped at a "scenic overlook," and there was a crowd of tourists watching a bear standing on the guard rail, licking the frosting out of a cake box it had scavenged from the trash. Of course, one person had to get up close for a photo, and a guy told her she ought not to. Her snide, "I know what I'm doing!" turned to a screech when the bear pulled its head out of the cake box to snarl at her, and she fell on her arse trying to back quickly away.
