A man just walked into the Comet restaurant in DC with a rifle. No shots heard. I'm ok, hiding in the red fox coffeeshop next door.

DC police arrested a man who allegedly walked through the Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Chevy Chase with a gun on Sunday afternoon. The man, who was not identified, entered the pizza restaurant about 3 PM and proceeded to walk toward the back room where some patrons were playing table tennis.

The gunman, who a witness described as a tall blond male who appeared to be in his early 20s, did not fire his weapon, and no injuries have been reported. The restaurant’s staff moved quickly to call the police and evacuate the restaurant.

“A lot of us saw he had a gun and we all started getting our families out,” says Sharif Silmi, a Maryland lawyer who was at the restaurant with his wife and three children. “The staff came and got us.”

During the election season Comet became the unlikely center of a far-right conspiracy theory predicated on hacked e-mails from Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. The restaurant, which also hosts music shows, announced on Thursday it would add security to its music shows following intense, mostly remotely conducted harassment of the venue and its employees.

This is about the "Pizzagate" scandal that supposedly revolved around the Comet pizza restaurant. This is a big deal to the online community. I think it was started on Reddit and has spread massively to other online venues.

It might be real or it might not be. But the issue is far bigger than this one particular restaurant or the supposed specific people involved. The scandal seems to me driven in large part due to politics. The people talking about this issue seem to be more interested in demonizing the supposed abusers. They are painting Hillary, Podesta and others like they are the worst thing to ever happen and are calling them all kinds of name (pedophiles, etc.) They are also including Obama in this supposed scandal. Once again, politically driven.

People are blinded by political ideology and don't look at the broader picture. We need to be concerned with all children in all places, all over the world. Not just in specific places that suit our political ideology.

This seems to be a "witch hunt" of some kind. There is a lot of venom involved here with people posting videos and content that is drawing a lot of views.

There was some right-wing conspiracy theory claiming that Hillary and Podesta were running a child-trafficking sex ring out of a pizza place in DC. Apparently someone was actually crazy enough to believe it.

Edit: I should rephrase. Thousands have been crazy enough to believe it, one was crazy enough to take a gun into the place.

I don't use Reddit at all, but I enjoy lurking /pol/, and the basic logic seems to be...

1. 'cheesy pizza' is a euphemism for 'child porn'
2. Podesta had multiple emails about getting pizza, and is apparently an avid pizza fan
3. This particular pizza place is a favorite of his
4. This pizza place also features incredibly suspicious photos on the Twitter, including empty rooms(!) and adults hugging children (!!!!!!!!)

Therefore, the place is an international child trafficking ring frequented by all of DC's and the NWO's most powerful pedos.

Usually their trolling is pretty entertaining to me, but this is definitely sick. There are enough mentally ill people out there that this could conceivably really result in operators of the restaurant being killed over total fiction.

Yes. We should not find this kind of shit amusing, when thousands of people actually start to believe it. Just check the #pizzagate crap on twitter if you want to be aware of how many idiots and mentally ill people there are out there.

Mixture of both, but it's not just literal psychward people. A lot of hardcore nationalists from all over the globe post there (ironic to see how Slavs have embraced the term 'neo-Nazi'), and since 4chan is anonymous and largely unmoderated, it provides an outlet for extreme ideology that people couldn't find elsewhere (outside of Stormfront and such). I think it is probably the most active political forum on the internet right now; it has overtaken /b/ as the most active board on 4chan, at least. Years ago they used to at least get a nice blend of commies, anarchists, etc on the board, but anti-establishment, pro-fascist politics are the hot ticket right now, along with all the unverified conspiracy stuff that comes with the territory.

Sometimes one shouldn't automatically dismiss the so-called conspiracy theories. The corporations and the well connected run the news system. The content called news we see definitely is filtered and some of the alternative discussions are not even allowed to air. So obviously some people need an outlet to discuss or share those viewpoints. It seems that this sort of content has usually been looked down on since it is not part of the "mainstream." I'm not sure though.

Just like a lot the stuff, maybe 95%, you see on TV is utter garbage, so might 95% of stuff on the internet. There is maybe 5% or less of it out there that has some truthfulness to it - or some legitimacy at least.

The same can be applied to Youtube as well. It seems like there are more channels now with large audiences that are spouting a lot of viewpoints; these seem to be centered on political content not ever shown on mainstream channels, TV or otherwise. The content on these sorts of channels is often related to current trends in politics but something extra is added to draw attention from the alternative crowd. So basically, you have a similar formula with some extra spice added in and all of a sudden, these outlets have large followings of loyal and passionate people.

Most of these "alternative" outlets have their own biases and agendas so ultimately, the truth gets always gets lost. It is very rare to find something or someone out there in the sea of lies that has anything real or meaningful to say.

Erm, I just pointed out the craziness behind the attack. I wasn't saying it was justified. I clearly said in my post it was a right-wing conspiracy theory.

OK, mental issues seems clear then.

Whether it's true or not, would you leave your kids around a man who owns those types of art paintings? I dont really have a position on pizzagate but do think those paintings are sick.

I think it's probably half mental health, have "for the lulz" without thinking of how it might actually impact people in the real world (hint: the people who work at this pizzeria have been getting harassed, death threats, and had to hire extra security just because of a bullshit conspiracy theory)

As a followup to the initial reports, the man DID in fact fire his gun and specifically told police he went there to "self investigate" the pizzagate conspiracy theory.

A North Carolina man was arrested Sunday after he walked into a popular pizza restaurant in Northwest Washington carrying an assault rifle and fired one or more shots, D.C. police said. The man told police he had come to the restaurant to “self-investigate” an election-related conspiracy theory involving Hillary Clinton that spread online during her presidential campaign.

The incident caused panic, with several businesses going into lockdown as police swarmed the neighborhood after receiving the call shortly before 3 p.m.

Police said 28-year-old Edgar Maddison Welch, of Salisbury, N.C., walked in the front door of Comet Ping Pong and pointed a firearm in the direction of a restaurant employee. The employee was able to flee and notify police. Police said Welch proceeded to discharge the rifle inside the restaurant.

Not very smart of the guy to walk in with a gun to "investigate" knowing there's already heighten security there. Perhaps false flag to shutdown "fake news" investigations?

Hillary is pretty amazing, finding time to run a child sex ring in the middle of a campaign, right under the nose of the Secret Service. It just shows that she really could have killed Vince Foster.

Did you see how easily that idiot baydude was able to deflect the truth? These are some seriously fucked in the head people. I've met quite a few and they seem totally normal until you talk about politics (of course there are those who immediately come off like that crazy uncle everyone has). I'm still trying to figure out how they became so mental. All of them seem pretty well off too. Personally I think it has something to do with lead poisoning. Our infrastructure is failing after all.
