i'm just back from a ski trip and I used the German autobahn, whole stretches where I was doing 200 km/h and some crazy Germans were still passing me like i was standing still

In Illinois, they just passed a law that anything over 100mph is basically 1 year in PRISON minimum. It's pretty strict now.

I assume this is what you're referring to:
http://www.criminallawyerillinois.c...nois-increase-penalties-for-speeding-tickets/

Which isn't really similar to what you said. For starters, 1 year (or a fine) is the maximum sentence, not the minimum sentence. But that was the case before, the only difference now is that you can't have the charged dropped after court supervision (i.e. not getting another ticket for a certain amount of time). I think you'd find that reckless driving is a misdemeanor in most states which could be punished with a jail sentence, but in practice it's always punished with a fine.

States are cracking down on street racing, but I don't think any state wants to spend $30k+ per year to put you in prison if you drove too fast and didn't hurt anyone. They'd rather fine you and/or take your car.

I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. :p

I'm an ignorant Amurican, I have no need for the metric system.

He has not caused any accidents, so jail sentence is absolutely stupid. I have clocked 120mph in my car plenty of times, when there is no one around me, which is on a race track.

So the guy driving drunk shouldn't get arrested if he doesn't hit anyone or anything?

That's ridiculous...not to mention draconian. You are an upstanding member of society, you earn a good living, provide for your family, pay your taxes, but you were doing 101mph in a 65 zone in your $80,000 BMW. Sorry, off to prison with you...now you're a burden on society, you will lose your job and probably your wife and house.

Nice fucking country we live in. :|

You guys jail people for speeding? Is there anything in the USA you don't go to jail for?

It's called reckless driving. I know it may surprise you that driving 140mph down a road filled with other drivers is dangerous (and can even kill people!), but yes, you can go to jail for speeding. Nice troll attempt though.

Meh, I hit 120mph on the 5 freeway in a nice open stretch between Oceanside and San Clemente. This is about a 10 mile stretch of freeway that separates Orange County and San Diego County, there is one rest area, one exit and a Border Patrol checkpoint.

I did this in a Lotus Elise with less than 3,000 miles on it on a Friday early afternoon a few years ago right before the Christmas holiday so traffic was very light and I only opened it up for maybe a half mile or so when there was a break in traffic (no cars ahead of me for 1/2 mile).

It wasn't dangerous and I endangered nobody.

Wasn't dangerous unless you consider the possibility of your rear suspension calling it quits and shearing itself apart. ;)

And the chances of that happening are???

Probably a little worse than shredding a tire at those speeds. That'd be fun. Really.

Don't get me wrong, I like to go fast. However, those speeds on a public roadway really is reckless.

Edit: Before you go nuts and start spouting off the speed ratings of the tires that come on that BWM, ask yourself one thing: can you be absolutely sure they are brand new tires and free of defects? I can't either.

If it were made by Chrysler, about 9/10 chance :p
Doing 100mph in a nice car doesn't seem so bad. Even my Honda Civic could do that no problem, and that's the cheapest car ever.

140 Miles Per Hour is equivalent to 225 Kilometers Per Hour.
Also the top speed of a 2005 Nissan Altima. That was actually pretty scary. Would not do again.

Agree x1000. If we really wanted to get fair with things, we'd even put a sliding scale on fines. $1m/yearly income? $15,000 speeding ticket. $12k/yearly income? $30 ticket. (for typical things like 51mph in a 40, etc, not for doubling the speed limit). I think anything double the speed limit and you should get your license suspended for at least 2 years, plus pay a huge fine to get it back. Maybe make the fines gradiant for every 10mph over the speed limit, like some jurisdictions do.

I say that above because the rich guy looks at a $350 ticket and says "who gives a f", and goes about driving like a retard because he can just pay it all off if he wants (most people are not this irresponsible, but the point stands), while a family making it by on minimum wage and a beater might get a registration ticket or some nonsense and $350 is literally taking the clothes off of their back. Oh, and if they don't pay the ticket? They get thrown in jail, have a big chance of losing their job, and if the car gets impounded, they might not even be able to afford to get it out, so they potentially end up jobless, homeless, carless, and generally fucked over by this money-making scheme that the local traffic courts have become. It's more humane to just shoot them in the head with a nice .40 and call it a day.
