Man jailed after filming himself driving 140 mph

PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) – A man who filmed the speedometer of his car while driving more than 140 miles per hour so he could post it on YouTube, ended up in jail on Saturday and the video confiscated, police said.

Stanislav Vadimovich Bakanov was pulled over by police on Oregon Interstate 5 after he was clocked driving his black 2005 BMW at 118 mph. He filmed Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Postlewait as he approached the car.

When Postlewait asked why he was videotaping, Bakanov said he was filming his speedometer, and his arrest, to post on Youtube. The video later revealed that Bakanov had attained speeds in excess of 140 mph.

He was arrested and confined in Marion County jail Saturday night, charged with reckless driving and speeding. It was his third speeding incident in the past year. The video was confiscated and will be used as evidence against him.

Marion County Police spokesman Don Thompson said winds were gusting at up to 50 mph during the day.

"There were tree branches down on the freeway. To be driving at these speeds today was just plain crazy," he said.

should have driven over to Montana, don't they have roads with no limits? Could have probably earned a Darwin award if the tried 140 on those roads.

1) Do something illegal
2) Film your own participation in this action
3) Post video in a public location

What could possibly go wrong?

You guys jail people for speeding? Is there anything in the USA you don't go to jail for?
Going over the limit a bit is a monetary penalty. Going that fast...that probably bumps it up a notch. And he's evidently excessively stupid too, though that's (unfortunately) not illegal.

I didn't RTFA, but it seems like Mr. Bakanov will face little more than a stiff financial penalty? Obviously he has money, and it doesn't seem like he's going to prison, so he'll still get his youtube lulz.

Yeah how dumb do you have to be?

unfortunately, being a colossal douchebag forum troll is not a jailable offense. Don't worry though, we're all lobbying our politicians in the hope that one day, much like reckless driving, it will be. Until then, please carry on.

My understanding of Montana (and residents, please feel free to correct) is: Although in many places there are no posted limits, if the Police Officer feels you are going excessively fast then he damned well *can* pull you over and ticket you.

It's possible if you go fast enough - Yes. Though the charge wouldn't necessarily be speeding, but more like Reckless Endangerment, Evading Police, or some other charge the courts feel may be appropriate. Most people aren't quite that reckless.

You may be confused about the difference between jail and prison. Prison is where you serve a sentence after trial, jail is where they take you to wait for trial (and also to serve some shorter sentences). For most minor traffic offenses they just give you a ticket and expect you to show up for court. 140 mph isn't a minor traffic offense. I'm not sure if I did the unit conversion correctly, but it's equivalent to something like 250 degrees celsius. So they would have taken him to jail to wait for his arraignment where he would be formally charged, he'd enter his plea, the judge would set bail and he would be free to go after posting bail.

Going to jail isn't punishment for the offense. He won't spend time in prison or jail as punishment for the offense.

I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. 😛

140 Miles Per Hour is equivalent to 225 Kilometers Per Hour.

I can think of one person I knew who was arrested for speeding. The cops clocked him going over 90 MPH in a 35 MPH zone.

In Illinois, they just passed a law that anything over 100mph is basically 1 year in PRISON minimum. It's pretty strict now.
