As for in the US, he probably shouldn't... because i don't think the US systems normally covers this. He shouldn't receive preferential treatment just because this made headlines.

You bring up a good point. If he were not in prison, he would have to pay for the operation. No insurance company would pay for it. So why should he get special surgery, covered by tax payer dollars, when he is in prison? To me, the prisoner is getting more rights than those that are free.

Aidanjm, why should a prisoner receive an operation in prison that he never would have gotten for free otherwise? Why should he receive special rights in prison?

I have to wonder about that also.

I guess the theory (which I do not subscribe to) is that society has denied him the chance to save up money and pay for the operation himself by imprisoning him. It seems to me HE is the one who made that choice by killing his wife, but apparently there are those who think that society owes prisoners MORE than they would have if they hadn't committed awful crimes. I find the whole thing just ridiculous.

It seems that way to me also. I remember a long time ago a convicted murderer sued some state prison for refusing him conjugal visits. He claimed they were denying him the right to reproduce. LOL, he was a convicted murderer, he forfieted his rights AFAIC. Needless to say, he lost his case.

People seeking amputation as a result of alien limb syndrome or body integrity identity disorder are not psychotic. Also, while gender reassignment surgery is a widely accepted treatment for gender identity disorder (within psychiatry) the amputation of limbs is not yet a widely accepted treatment for individuals with body integrity identity disorder. (Although some kind surgeons have performed amputations for these people, alleviating their sufering).

Actually, they will likely not get their amputations at the hospital at all, because of ethical issues with performing such a surgery (I wouldn't do it, for one).

Because of the reluctance of surgeons (or hospitals) to allow these kinds of surgeries, many of these individuals (with body integrity identity disorder) eventually attempt surgery on themselves. They use guns, chain saws, trains, guillotines, etc. to remove the offending limb. Usually they botch it, and a surgeon has to clean up the mess.

Here we're dealing with the same kind of a procedure.

well, not, not really. The difference is that gender reassignment surgery is now a widely accepted (among mental health professionals) approach for individuals with gender identity disorder. Limb amputation is not an accepted approach (at this stage) with people with body integrity identity disorder. It is only a rare few surgeons who are willing to perform these surgeries. Even then, it is very difficult to find a hospital willing to allow these surgeries to be performed.

It's not required by any stretch of the imagination, because if the person is not going to be able to harm themselves, they will only suffer psychologically.

Yeah. Kind of like depression, OCD, psychosis, etc. It's "only" psychological suffering. Nothing to worry about - not.

Unless this is going to be good practice for the docs and free, I don't want my money paying for that.

I can only pray that empathy-deficient people such as yourself don't get to make that decision.

It's not that hard. Even murderers are human.

But my main point is that medical decisions (for incarcerated individuals) should be made by doctors, not by elected officials or the mob or prison authorities.

In Australia, transgendered individuals can get gender reassignment surgeru free of charge. They don't have to pay for it. It's provided free, because it's recognised that people with gender identity disorder are incredibly miserable, have high rates of suicide, blah blah. It amazes me that in the USA only people who can afford it are provided with adequate medical care.

When I was growing up I wanted to be a professional baseball player, but I soon realized it was not to be because I wasn't good enough. This dummy while growing up wanted to be a woman, he just hasn't realized yet that it isn't going to happen because he isn't good enough(if he was good enough he would be one). Such is life.

No power on Earth can make me a professional baseball player just as no power on Earth can make him a woman. Some dreams will always remain just that ....DREAMS.

Every once in a while I remember that you chose to co-exist with the ants in your house rather than set off a bug bomb.

I'm done here.

edit: found it. bwaaaahahahahaha

These are ants. This is not some wayward black bear rooting through your trash. You can't hit them with a tranquilizer dart and relocate them. If you don't kill them they will come back. Eventually they will take over your house.

I'd like to think we can come to some kind of understanding.

Basically, this guy is a convicted murderer. Since he has been in prison he has gone through a "gender identity crisis" and will kill himself if he doesn't get a sex change. Therefore, his psychiatrist says it is every bit as necessary to operate as it would be for a patient with a burst appendix.

WTF is this place coming to that my tax dollars go to pay for a convicts whackitoffofme?

id deny the operation and let the idiot kill himself. then again, some lib judge would probably allow his family to sue afterwards. but funk it, atleast the world would have one less nutball to deal with.

Wow. Just... wow.

You cannot make the quality of health care a prisoner receives dependant on the nature of her or his crime. You cannot deny health care to a prisoner because she or he is a murderer (as opposed to e.g., a shoplifter). A prisoner's punishment is determined by the law and by the sentencing judge. Restriction of freedom or incarceration is an acceptable punishment. With-holding of medical treatment is not an acceptable punishment (rather, it is immoral and illegal).

From that perspective, if you have a mother of two who will die without a liver transplant, and a convicted murder has the same problem, who gets the liver? All things being equal in duration of illness, compatibility, etc.

The minute he murdered his wife he lost all rights and sympathy.

I don't want a penny of my MA taxes going towards this ridiculousness. If he's suffering, tough cookies, he should have considered the pain and suffering of his murdered wife and her family & friends.
