Man, I was *so* close to finishing 4 years worth of document shredding...

I'm moving to a new place soon and am trying to get rid of as much junk as possible in preparation for the move. Tonight, I ran across bank and credit card statements and receipts dating back to 2003 (remember $1.399/gal for gas?!) and decided to shred them.

After finishing all the credit card statements and receipts, and with just two months worth of bank statements left, my shredder stopped working. Hopefully it's just overheated and not actually broken. :(

I don't think my neighbors, nor the fire department, would look too kindly upon that...but thanks for the suggestion.

Wish I had a grill. Don't currently own one. :)

Seems like shredding would take more effort than just cutting with scissors or something. Put them in the recycling bin and the garbagemen will take care of shredding.

Why would I let my garbage collector see my credit card activity and bank account numbers?

Lesson's learned: don't buy a cheap shredder.

Pretty much any commercial shredder will overheat at some point. They have it in their specs: x minutes of shredding, y minutes for cooling off.

The garbageman isn't going to dig through your paper to steal your identity.

You sure about that?

Wow, that's gotta suck. I have a big bonfire going outside as we speak, but next week, I'm venturing a short walk away into the state forest where everyone's camping out and having a big bonfire. No restrictions here, fortunately. OP, swing on by with your documents, toss them in my fire and have a beer. :)

Options:
1. My shredder still works. Send your stuff to me and I'll take care of it.

2. Does your neighbor have a Weber?

3. Break out the scissors!

4. When my shredder stopped working after 35 minutes of ozone smell, I opened it up and found the problem. I don't remember what it was, but it was pretty simple and the shredder has been going strong for at least three years after that incident. I remember that there was a mess of greasy gears and paper dust inside, so be aware.

Where does the identity thief find these?

Your trash. Because people find it hard to believe that anyone would want to pour through garbage cans, they throw away the darndest things - things like unsolicited credit card applications, old bills, expired credit cards, unused checking account deposit slips and countless other papers. So, for the identity thief, a bit of "dumpster diving" can provide a rich harvest of personal information - information that can be used to become you.
