I can't believe there are successful gofundme accounts for morons now.

A Maine man accidentally torched his parents' home over the weekend while trying to exterminate ants.

Investigators with the state fire marshal's office said this week that 21-year-old Devon Doucette was trying to incinerate the ants with wooden matches when he inadvertently ignited combustible material that caused flames to rapidly envelope the Old Orchard Beach home.

While Doucette escaped with his life and his parents weren't home at the time of the blaze, three family pets weren't as lucky.

According to a GoFundMe page created by a friend of the Doucettes, two cats and a dog were killed in the fire.

"Sadly, the wonderful Doucette family had a house fire yesterday and lost everything, including their loving pets," the friend, Erica Hebert Albair, wrote as part of a plea to help the family with expenses related to the total loss.

The fundraiser was created Sunday with a goal of $10,000. By Monday, that amount had been surpassed.

According to Albair, the community has come out in force with not just money but also with everyday items the family will need as they pick up the pieces.

"I can't even begin to tell you the amount of item donations by so many people. So many people are beyond words about the generosity from all of you. The gratitude is undefinable," she wrote.

Doucette was treated for 2nd degree burns and smoke inhalation and released.

Investigators said he is unlikely to face charges.

Pretty sure it's going to take more then 10 grand to fix that lol. I could ALMOST understand if it was spiders, but ants? Just spray that and call it a day. If it was red ants they do stink though, they have a weird scent to them. Still would not use fire though.

If the neighbors knew and liked him/the family enough to start the campaign, it's plausible that he's legitimately mentally disabled and they just felt bad.

I almost feel bad for him, imagine living with the idea that you literally burnt down your parents' house because of stupidity. People joke about not letting kids play with matches so they don't burn the house down, and here is this (supposedly) grown up who goes and does it lol.

I was looking for the key words, "alcohol is believed to be involved". I find it disturbing that those words are not there.

It's going to be sad when they go to recover their stuff and it's burnt and covered in ants.

And as dumb and deserving as the "kid" was, his parents don't deserve total loss.

As kids, we used to play with fire outside. It was facing a fairly busy street and some woman stopped her car and came and put out the small fire with her shoes. We were inquisitive/fascinated, yet dumb... she did a great thing for us, and our parents.

Insurance probably cover any of that either huh?

Yeah doubt it. Would probably fall under negligence. Insurance business is an odd thing though. I know someone who worked in the reconstruction business and insurance actually has a certain number of claims they need to do per year, I forget the explanation, something to do with taxes. So sometimes they will cover something that they normally would not cover, if their overall claims are low that year.

The slob should have just cleaned his house. They probably would have just gone away.... Who the hell has ants in the winter time anyway?? That's a summer thing...
