SIT tones are the tones that precede "You've reached the number that has been disconnected..." message.
Telemarketing computers remove your number when they detect these tones.
Some even say that the first of the three tones is enough. People record them at the beginning of their answering machine messages. It only works when your answering machine picks up the phone.

If you want to manually zap an "out of area" call, you need to have answering machine software, so that when your phone rings, starting the software will play the entire "You've reached the number that has been disconnected..." message that you've recorded as an outgoing message.

Now, it's hard to believe but in this day and age, there is almost no answering machine software that can easily play wav files as outgoing messages. I've tested a lot of them and have found only one that can do this easily and it's buggy.

It's IVM Phone Answering and Call Attendant Software

I say buggy because it turns out the length of the outgoing wav message can crash Windows ME. If it's longer than 12 seconds Windows Me crushes. No problems with exact same message cut to about 10 seconds.

(Actually, I found out that you can repeat the same message several times if you set this under options, so it will play the same 10 second wav message several times no problem, but if the wav message is longer than about 12 seconds, it will result in a blue screen crash for Windows ME only) Note that these problems are gone when I booted into Windows XP on the same dual boot machine.

Of course if you can find answering machine software that can play already made sound files, don't hold back and share.

Thanks for the update man! =]
:D

You guys that want this better get there on 11/17.
I bought this for $9.99 a few months ago, and they were out of stock on the same afternoon.

Fry's is the only other store I know that carries it. You can try PMing there if your OM sells out.
That's what I had to do.

I see that you can play recordings onto the phone line using this modem.

Can you also record from the phone or use this as a speaker phone/answering machine?

I just use it to connect to the internet.
I installed Netwaiting, but it didn't work for me.

Yes, yes/yes with appropriate software if you can find it. Read the post above:

(Check out the Related Software section.)
If you can find better software that can do this, let us now.

Good advice. I just went there at 9:30 am and I luckilly got the last one in stock. If you don't go now, you'll likely miss out. Thanks for this modem thread - I've been looking for one for my hot deals Dimension 4500.

Win ME is the suck. What did you expect?

Yes, well, that's why we try to have dual boot systems.
Of course, this is not true for all machines but if you have a dual boot situation and know how to tweak XP, and still end up with Me running faster... see what I mean.

I've had a Windows XP-Windows Me combo since XP was released.
Me is based on Windows 98 so it's good if you have something that doesn't work with Windows 2000 based XP. I must admit I'm using Me far more than I am XP despite its flaws.

You did hear about frequent Microsoft XP announcements like the one that was discussed here about anyone anywhere being able to create a web link so that when you click on it, it erases any or all folders on your computer (only if you're running Windows XP).

"Ever since its release, Windows XP has contained a critical flaw that could be trivially exploited at any time by any malicious hacker. By causing any Windows XP system to process a specially-formed URL (web-style link), the XP system would obediently delete all or most of the files within any specified directory." Windows Me is B-U-G-G-Y but it's not capable of erasing your files that easily.

For any of you running Windows XP that didn't do so already here's a fix for this HUGE Windows XP flaw that can end up erasing files on your hard drive 'cause Lord knows you visit twisted sites you shouldn't (*guilty ;)*)

Why, is there an issue with any one of those?

Thanks. As long as it works well for you, there's isn't an issue really. But PCTel is known to suck, and Lucent is regarded as the least troublesome of the winmodem chipsets.

I believe Conexant releases generic drivers now for their modem chipsets. So if you're having any issues and Best Data's drivers aren't doing it for you, give Conexant's a try.
