just go to the store, the deal is good there too. you don't have to pay shipping that way. shipping is only free on orders over $50

Omax rebates take about a month and a half. they go through a company called "young america" i think, and they hire a lot of "special" people to do the verification work so it takes a while.

They have a good deal on CD-r's too. $5 AR for 200. # 2014-8519

I bought one of these modems at the start of Oct. I went back to get a price adjustment and they wouldn't saying "It's 14 days on electronics!" Aargh!

Anyway, my experience with this modem is that it is not really good. I had two machines that I could have installed it into. The Win98SE machine would not install it, it kept asking for a PCI device driver and it wasn't on the CD OR the driver file I downloaded from the Bestdata site. I put it in an XP machine and XP decided it was a generic 56K modem right off the bat. I figured I'd install the included drivers for some reason and then XP had a hard time with the "unknown PCI device" error. I downloaded the newest XP installer off their site and that seemed to fix the issue.

If you need a backup modem this will be fine, but make sure you install before 14 days in case you need to return it...

Caveat Emptor, imho...

I just got back from OM and as expected they didn't have any.
So I asked the guy at the counter to call the nearest store and see if they had any.
He started to pick up the phone and realized that the regional manager was there so he
just asked him. The manager came over and said that all the stores in his region were out, but
because of a goof up of them not sending enough modems to the stores they are extending this deal
by a full week. He said they expect to have a much larger shipment on Thursday of this week at
all the New Hampshire stores.
I guess he knows what he is talking about since he is the regional manager, but I always have kind of
an unsure feeling when people say things like this.
I can't see how they could extend this for only this region. So I would think this extention is nationwide, but
I don't know.

Telephone modems are also helpful for faxing from your computer as well as to zap telemarketers, orangel, you foo:disgust:!

This is an excellent deal.
Thank you handydave.

P.S.

Remove your old modem from the Device Manager. Shut down the computer. Put the new modem in. Now for the most important part: Hit Cancel when Windows detects new hardware on startup. Now go to the driver folder and double click on HXFSETUP.EXE. Wait a couple of minutes for both the modem and wave device for modem to be fully installed, then restart computer, except for Windows XP where you would click on NEXT after you get a new harware found wizard activated by HXFSETUP.EXE.

If you install your modem in any other way, then yes, "Win98SE machine would not install it." Of course. Read those simple one paragraph instructions.

Anyone know why the link to the site wont work (I know I have to refresh). It worked like 2 days ago, but yesterday & today it says "Sorry, This product is currently unavailable."

I dont even see it under modems on their site. Can anyone give me the SKU or Item # so if I goto B&M, I know what I'm asking for. Thanx.

«I downloaded the newest XP installer off their site and that seemed to fix the issue.»

Does it work with the built-in XP Fax applet? The bargain modem I have now cannot be used with that.

I think they sold out. The modem was 56HP-92 and I think the item number was 32444556.

I got one. I wanted to have a modem around in case of emergencies. I bought a USR V.90 modem too for that purpose a few months ago. It was 22 dollars after the rebate. Which one would you guys keep?? I figure the USR still sealed could easily be sold.

I wish I got in on this. No, I'm not switching away from DSL, but it's nice to have one to send faxes.

The same reason I want it...definitely using my road runner for internet...but would like to send faxes w/o printing them out and then going to my fax machine.

Also, the OM near my house didnt have any in stock but called another store that had 2 left. I went there and they werent on the shelf. The shelf actually said OOS. I had to ask the guy who went to the back and pulled one out. So even if it seems OOS, I suggest asking to make sure.

EDIT: I just realized that my entry helps no one since the rebate just ended today didnt it.

Turns out USR is U.S. Robotics. That's a better brand name than Best Data but I'd hit the spec pages on their web sites to compare specific models.

Ha-ha you know what else?
Exact same modem is advertized in Circuit City ad this week - $20, no rebates.
