Major snow storm dc-nyc this weekend (1/23/16)

No, you Canadians set aside money. vehicles, personnel, salt, etc. As well as having well experienced personnel managing large storms.

We have none of that because we get that once every 5-10 years, if that.

If you dont understand simple shit like this I just cant help you.
 
storm is a little overhyped so far. only have like an inch maybe, snow hardly coming down, although i know the worst is yet to come.

Our "resources" arn't magic either. The roads don't magically get plowed the minute the snow falls.

I would hope that everyone at very last owns a snow shovel and basic car brush. That's about the only resources you need, stuff like snow blowers and snow plows just make the job easier.

But to add a bit of humour, this is a sign someone in my city put up recently.

So what resources do you guys think we have that you don't have? I'm genuinely curious. Ours might be a bit more organized from a logistics point of view (snow removal schedules etc) but at the end of the day when a storm hits, we're all in the same boat by the next morning. We have to dig our cars out, and head to work on roads that have not been plowed.

You're maybe one level above a retard. Yes, good luck driving your car in 20-30" of snow that the city won't start plowing til sometime on Saturday and will take days to plows. And when DC has 1/100 of the snow equipment that your city has and places like Boston are going to send them assist due to the storm. You must be related to the OP.

The snow gets packed down from other cars, when the forecast says 30" it does not actually mean there will be 30" of snow in the road all in one shot. There might be like 4" and it might be a little drifty.

My street does not get plowed till sometimes a week after a storm, and everyone does fine. Well, you still hear of people getting stuck and what not, but overall it's not really a big deal. Not fun to be in that situation but something that you laugh off after the fact.

It depends where you are on how much plowing equipment is available. I live in MA, so there are a lot of plows. Even during the worst of it last year, I think the longest I waited to be plowed (as in my street) was still less than 24 hours. The places that are about to get hammered don't really have the equipment because they normally don't get these storms. While cities and towns do own some plowing equipment, a lot of it is done on contract, so if you don't live somewhere that gets a lot of snow, people aren't going to spend the $1500 for a plow (assuming they already have a work/beater truck to throw it on).

I love how weather threads always have people expressing surprise (and I may have been guilty of this in the past, so forgive me) over how places with less experience dealing with snow/precipitation/temperature extremes/hurricanes can't deal with what's perceived as "not a big deal" by some other area that has more experience with it.

And even worse is the subtle bragging or condescension, as if the person has anything to do with the disaster response or larger scale cleanup of their town/city/state/country, or that somehow it's a point of pride and strength being able to withstand the brunt of mother nature's fury. No place is well equipped to handle every type of inclement weather scenario or disaster, and if anyone is to blame over overhyping storms and the like it's the media looking to amp up ratings.

News flash: it gets old and no one cares. If you want to do something useful by just sharing your experience, that's good and commendable, but the "lol look at everyone losing their minds over X" isn't insightful... not that it has to be, but what a waste of a post.

They just bumped our forecast up from 12"-20" to 18"-24". Just started snowing about 3 hours ago, nothing heavy so far, but the surface is so cold that it's been sticking since the first flake. About an inch or two so far.

Welp, spent 2.5 hours shoveling, salting, snowraking the roof (much harder than I thought), and clearing the cars off. I beat the storm so far but the storm may get my back tomorrow morning. I must be in great shape to do all of that and not really be tired. Thank you powerlifting.

My power's fine so far. I was slacking collecting wood this year, and only have two days of fuel. I'd like to light a fire today, but feel like I should save it in case the power goes out. I'd be pissed though if I lost a good fire day and the power never dropped.
