I grew up with accessible computing labs in school. That was sufficient.
You grew up in a time when laptops were astronomically expensive compared to desktops. And I bet your computing lab back then spent more money per desktop computer than we're spending per laptop today.

while true, I still don't see buying kids laptops as being functionally teaching them much of anything. our kids sometimes barely get the basics of non-tech stuff... but of course, this varies from place to place, and Maine, I suspect, isn't failing left and right.

But unless they have a specific way of using these to further kid's education, I still find it a waste, regardless of whether they are macs or not. Now, if they have a plan, and a goal in mind other than "let's give them all laptops!" then I'll stand down on the comment. But it just seems people throw technology at a problems before actually figuring out what they can actually do with it.

Maybe Maine got a break on the price in exchange for a new iLiver.

Damned lucky for kids to have their own computers let alone laptops, I remember the old Apple II computer labs, and using XTs for BASIC programming.
