Mail in Rebate FAIL.

Just finished talking to a guy who has no idea how mail in rebates work. He brought the receipt to me saying his wife has tried everything and doesn't know how to claim it. There is a link on the receipt to a website for claiming the rebate. On that site there is a PDF with clear instructions. So I go through the process step by step for him entering all his personal info that ASUS asks for. There are 2 models of the monitor that are identical but only differ by barcode so I tell him I'll need to see the box. He threw it away. :| Nice. Sorry sir there's nothing we can do now. They needed the barcode from that box.

He wants to know if we can just use the barcode from another box. I tell him no ever box has a unique serial number and they will not just take a written note with the serial number on it, it HAS to be the original bar code from the box. He want to know why none of this was written on the receipt.

Facepalm.

And you'd be fucking wrong. How do you work in retail and not know what a UPC is? Universal Product Code. U doesn't stand for unique, btw.

They won't take a copy b/c then you could... make a copy without buying the product, and send in the rebate as many times as you wanted to.

You can't make a copy without buying the product because they require a copy of the receipt as well.

wow, lots of PMSing going on in this thread.

OP, I hope the guy learned something today about MIRs and doesn't screw up again. : /

If only they were a machine that could copy whats printed on one piece of paper and print the exact some thing on another.

So if you could make a copy of the barcode, you could make a copy of the receipt too. Wasn't that hard?

Wow...good job making a copy of a receipt for a product that YOU DIDN'T EVEN BUY.

FAIL!

Yeah, if you were say a cashier, that wouldn't be hard at all.

edit: or if you were super srs, i'm sure you could buy a receipt printer and make fake ones. A small drop compared to all the money you could make w/fake MIRs omgwao

You could just buy it and return the product.

Note: Asus barcodes tend to have a unique serial number as well as the UPC, at least on motherboard boxes.

Most MIRs require you to cut out the UPC barcode from the box and paste it on the rebate form. This is done to prevent MIR frauds like you just mentioned.

i've only ever attempted two MIR's..... maxtor never sent mine to me and walgreens did, but it took 6+ months...... 4 to 6 weeks my @$$

This is why God decided it would be best to leave the PMS to women. They handle it better (but it sure is a bitch for women).

You rarely send in MIRs do you? Yes of course UPC stands for Universal Product Code. However most computer products contain both a UPC AND the product serial number on the same sticker. The manufacturer wants to see both the UPC to ensure you bought the right product (and an ORIGINAL copy of the receipt, no copies) AND they want to see the serial number. The requirement that you send in the serial number AND an original "copy" of the receipt makes pulling off scams much harder.

They require an Original copy. They will not accept a photocopy. Usually the teller should print out more than one "copy" for you. Or you should request it if they don't. I'm assuming this is what you mean.

Not all require this.

I mean he's being ridiculous - you can't just pull a receipt out of your ass for something you didn't purchase.

Most rebates DO accept copies of the receipt, but require original barcodes.

I've seen exceptions to both rules, though.
