Yeah that race was tough on me with my key board, I found that you have to try to knock the #1 red car out on the first turn if possible. Now after that race in the next mission I'm getting my ass handed to me by a bunch of thugs in an alley (I'm trying to protect the bartenders daughter), I don't how to get through this one since the control of the punching with the brass knucks is very slow and ackward. What do I do?????

Use a gamepad or steering wheel for that race. I used a gamepad and won the race by almost 30 seconds. I even lapped the last place car.

Don't hold it down for the knockout punch. Just keep tapping until you beat up the guys around you. Then look for Sarah.

Hell yeah. The ending is great. Best. . .ending. . .ever. Well, not really, but best I've seen in a really, really long time.

Are you kidding? A 1.4Ghz Athlon and a Radeon 8500 has trouble with this game??? What resolution?

What are the rest of you guys playing it on to get smooth frame rates?

I'm at 1024x768x32. I had to turn all the fancy stuff off, and put view distance at less than 50% on the slider to get good framerates while driving. At the original settings, I was seeing maybe 8-12 FPS. I think I have it up to 15-20 now, but I haven't checked because I don't want to get depressed.

The worst is freeride mode when I get in Tommy Gun fights with random gansters. Crowded street + about 10-12 cars on screen +maybe 8 pedestrians on screen + 3-4 guys with tommy guns shooting = bullet time from The Matrix.

Damn, and I just upgraded to a Radeon 8500 -128MB (retail, not LE).

My 1.5Ghz (O/C'd Tualatin Celeron - also PC-133) is gonna have as much trouble as your Athlon (maybe more). :(

Are you sure there isn't something else holding it back? I thought the recommended specs weren't that high.

EDIT: Minimum Specs are pretty low:

Minimum Requirements
P3600
128MB RAM
32MB Video Card
1.8GB hard disk space

ROFL - I just experienced my first computer game Sex scene. LOL. Actually I'm really impressed. They do such a good job of making it like a movie, but You are playing the movie. SO good

I'm not sure if anything else is holding it back. My framerates are OK in other games I've played recently (Jedi Knight II, Warcraft III). The framereate for Mafia is fine when on foot, especially when inside. Inside I am getting like 50-60 FPS, but outdoors, especially when driving the framerates drop like a rock.

Anyone else having a slow (FPS) gaming experience with Mafia?

NO THINKING TWICE!!!

This game really really rocks and is really worth the money.

I don't have any problems with FPS at all. I'm thinking they may have something conflicting (but I have no idea what)

Don't let that stop you from getting it. I was able to get the game plently playable and enjoyable, but there are slowdowns. Like I said, when walking or inside, the framerate is fine, usually like 50-60 FPS. It's driving and big gun fights that make it drop. But, the driving FPS vary. In some parts of the city and the country side, I get 30-40 FPS, in other parts of the city, especially with a lot of cars, it drops to like 15-25.

BTW, funny experience I just had in a mission. In this mission you have to steal a vechicle, and to do so you have to forcefully remove the driver (that's all I'lll say to not ruin it). But, they really don't want you to kill the guy, just rough him up (although you can knock him off if you want). So, I rip the guy out the vechicle, beat him a bit with my fists to get what I want out of him, and let him go. Then, he takes off running down the street and gets hit by a cable car and dies. :D That was hilarious.

Nice. :D The best I had was jacking a firetruck and then killing the driver. Apparently the cops saw me so I got in my shiny new firetruck and tried to run away. I accidently ran over a cop on the streets so now I'm wanted and the cops want to kill me. I drove around until I found a train station and got on one. The cops then proceeded to drive their car UP ONTO the train deck, but not far enough to where they can get out and kill me. I decided to kill all the guys in the train (because I couldn't punch them...heh), and just road the train until my wanted level disappeared. Got back to the same train station where I boarded, picked up my fire engine, and now I've got a fire engine. :D

This game has been tempting me for the last little while... might just have to go get it now. :)

One question though. Is it easy to switch from a wheel for the driving parts, to a gamepad or keyboard/mouse for the rest of the game? Basically, did they design the game with that in mind, or do you have to reconfigure your controllers for each mission, depending on what you do in the mission?

yes, when you first configure the controls in the options menu thre is different control setup for driving controls and normal contorls. Quite easy to do what you have in mind

Has anyone heard anything more about the multiplayer patch? I hope that wasn't just a rumor.

BTW, I'm buying this game if any of you guys have beaten it or didn't like it. Look for my thread in fs/ft (search for mafia).

No, you can assign two buttons(joystick or keyboard) to each action.
So its very easy, only need to configure your driving controller & keyboard layout once & forget it.

I only pick up my gamepad while driving & use good ole WSAD + mouse while on foot.

And I totally agree that winning the race with a keyboard was impossible, i tried 5 times & wrecked EVERY time with my keyboard.

Once I plugged in my Gravis eliminator gamepad, i won the race EASILY on the 1st try & was WAY ahead of the field!

It took me about 30 minutes but I beat it with my keyboard/mouse.

Now that I think about it I actually only used the keyboard. I guess I was just trying to say I didn't use a gamepad of any sort.

Has anyone beaten the mission "You Lucky B@stard!"? The guy you are supposed to kill keeps getting away from me.

Athlon XP 1800+
256mb ddr
Matrox G400

and I'm running it at 800x600 with "low" textures (big speedup) and everything in game maxed out, getting probably around 30fps
