MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION and overheating

I have a system I built myself that has been running fine for a year, but recently I've had some serious problems with it (wouldn't POST). I have RMA'd the motherboard and the processor/heatsink. It's booting up now, but overheating very quickly under no load (I only have a system monitoring tool open), going up to about 50 C and shutting down with a MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION. I'm sure that's being caused by overheating, but the question is why would it be overheating so quickly under such a tiny load? Here are the specs:

Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Processor: Athlon 64 3400+
PSU: Antec True 380S
GPU: XFX GeForce 6800GT
Memory: 2x512MB Patriot PC3200

Could this be a power supply issue? I can post the power readings from the system utility if that helps (I really don't know what's good/normal for those). Any ideas? I'm hoping to make a run out to a computer supply store if I can figure out something to buy to help out here. Thanks.

Are you sure you have the Heatsink installed (making proper contact with the CPU) correctly?

Are you OverClocking?
If not, have you checked the BIOS to see if "Dynamic OverClocking" is not enabled?

There is another recent thread concerning the Machine_check_exception here: BSOD. Even though that situation did not involve overheating, it may still help to read through it.

Your PSU should be fine since it is an Antec. Concerning the PSU, it may possibly not be powerful enough to handle overclocking and the 6800GT video card.

Maybe your heatsink/fan/cooling fins are extremely dirty, thereby preventing proper heat dissipation.

Thanks for your replies. No, I'm not doing any overclocking on the system, and the heatsink is clean (it's brand new from AMD--warranty replacement). Any other ideas?

I am having the same problem - brand new Athlon XP 3000+ with Biostar N4SLI. (thanks Anandtech Buyers Guide 🙂 )

Every once in a while I will get the "Machine_Check_Exception". I don't think it's heat related, at least not in my situation. - no overclocking, right out of the box.

It may help to test the hardware with available tests. Memory can be tested with memtest and the hard drive can be tested with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility.

The MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION is an indication of bad hardware. I'd go step by step with the RAM, vid card, network card, mobo, replacing them with known good until you don't have the prob anymore.
